Guys,
My search has narrowed down to an '86 targa & an '86 cab(same price, targa 25K less miles). I'd like to think I know good from bad as I've viewed & driven several 911's in my 3-4mos search. As the spark plugs are relatively easily accessible, why not perform my own compression test? As far I'm aware, this test consists of merely removing each plug & screwing in the tool, turning the car over & reading the results. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm thinking this is the way to go. My only concern is the lack of a professional test drive to rule out any tranny &/or linkage issues. I have appointments set up for next week, your responses are appreciated.
A compression test only tells some of the story. A good PPI performed by an independant Porsche shop examines hundreds of other issues/items. If you are VERY familiar w/ these cars (owned & worked on them for many years) a self-PPI is possible, otherwise definitely get a good shop to look at it.
I agree with an6drew, however if you do want to do it yourself, you should prepare a check list to ensure you don't forget anything. If I remember right, there is some sort of pre purchase check list either on this board or Pelican. Do a search and check out Rennlist and Pelicans tech articles there may be something there. Also, PCA may be able to help with a list. You may want to check their web site.
