993 Heads Up Info Needed
What should I expect to pay for an average 993?
What are maintenance costs/frequency on a 993 like as compared with a 944 or 964?
Thanks in advance. I live in the Northwest and am keeping my eyes open for a 993 or similar 911 that won't eat me alive in maintenance, be reliable, and still be relatively comfortable. Also, I do quite a bit of the mechanical work myself so I don't want to buy a car for which I'll be held totally hostage to the dealership.

You might want to do a search on the PCA technical web site (www.pca.org), as there's been discussion there on the plus's and minus of each model in the 993 line. Net, is that the first year (95) had some issues that later years fixed. The OBDII engines (96+) are having problems with clogged air injection pipes which logs a fault recording and turns a dash light on, and may impact your ability to pass state emissions tests. 993's are good 911's. I think 964's are good too. I do most of my own maintenance, and as complex as Porsches get, there are still some basics that make them fairly easy to work on (I do draw the line at rebuilding transmissions, though). For do it yourself, you do want to get the factory manual. If the 993 one is like the 964 one, some sections are good, and some the writer was asleep at the switch. There's a very active 993 Forum on Rennlist, you might want to saunter over there too.
