Porsche Carrera

If you are asking what Carrera means in the context of Porsche (not what it literally means), it is actually an interesting story. The first Carreras were special 356s named for the Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico. 356 Carreras were very special cars, and I know that 356 Carrera 2s had four cam engines. In the 911 world, special 911s were given the Carrera designation (1972 Carrera RS, Carrera RSR, Carrera 3.0 in the late 70s). In 1984, Porsche started calling all 911s Carreras and it has been that way ever since.
There is actually an interesting article about Porsche's Carrera naming scheme in this month's Panorama. I like how 356 Carrera 2 owners used to have shirts that read "Real Porsches have four cams."

The History of these Cars are what make ownership so interesting and special to me anyway. I must have a dozen ( 20 I just counted )books on Porsche. I have a cool shirt that has a picture of #152 a silver 356 that won it's class in 1953 in the CARRERA PANAMERICANA "MEXICO"
Interesting Race starts at the southern end of Mexico (Tuxtla Gutierrez) and the finish is on the US border at Juarez. The guy I bought the shirt from ran the race sometime in the 90's and I remember him saying it cost him about 70K by the time he was done. Sounds like a trip to me,
I gotta hit the lottery
Cheers
