Has anyone fixed a sloppy shifter? Is it a combination of trans problems and shifter? I was reading on the pelican site about a short thow shifter and the bushings to fix shifter. My problem is that when I move in to a gear I have to wiggle side to side or push it back in forth while going into gear. I think the trans may have around 200,000 miles on it.

Jeff, it sounds like you may be needing a transmission rebuild, which, at 200K miles, wouldn't be unreasonable. You say you're aware of the various bushings outside the transmission, which are pretty easy to replace. Their chief impact is to narrow the range of back/forth motion, that is to slightly tighten up the linkage. Before you decide on a transmission rebuild, make sure you linkage is properly adjusted. With the shifter in neutral, remove the rear cap in the center of the floor behind the front seats, loosen the small hex bolt in the coupler, turn the coupler all the way towards the passenger side, and ensure the shift lever, still in neutral, is all the way towards the drivers side. Tighten up. If correct, in 5th you should be able to have some fore and aft movement - not alot, but some.

Another thing to look for. Is the Allen "key" that attaches the shift coupler to the shift rod.
Found mine, was almost falling out.
If thats not it, than follow Bill's great instructions.
Good Luck .................

ditto on the allen key, when I bought my 911 it shifted REALLY bad, the allen key was so loose I don't know how it shifted.
The linkage is very very sensitive. GO to the pelican site and order the bushings and replace. They you will need to set and reset the positioning to find the correct sweet spot. The trans is really the weakest link on these cars, just so bad compared to the rest of it.

Start with the cheapest. 1)Drain tranny oil and replace with swepco. 2)buy the bushing that fits on the end on the shifter itself(cup bushing)it snaps into place. 3)Also buy the bushing that is in the tunnel which guides the shift rod. These are both very cheap.4)Then,take rear tunnel cover off and inspect the shift coupler bushing. Mine was dis-formed and needed to be replaced. Buy either a stock coupler or stomski which is more expensive, but worth it. And as also stated above, it takes some time to get the coupler just right. Lots of driving and experimenting. If none of that fixes it, then it's time for a rebuild. If your grinding gears, then most likely none of the above will work-synchros gone, teeth grounded off-check the fluid when you replace it for metal chunks.
