OK its time for a history lesson:

cone filters were actualy developed back in the 80's for desert racing in SCORE trucks, due to the shape, size and number of deep folds, these filters had some 3-4 times the surface area of filters that were previously used, thus the trucks could finish the race with out having to change filters due to silt blockage and lost power. Fine for a race truck, but we dont take our cars rallying.

also they cause a lot of turbulence in the intake and make it difficult for the air meters or MAF's to get an acurate reading.

What about the following part that is supposedly from an 85 carrera?
993 110 030 56

I believe this to actually be from a 95 not an 85.
I found it on ebay here

If it wil fit the 3.2 airbox from my 84, I would be willing to give it a shot before cutting up my only factory cover.
Any opinions or experience?

Dan,

All the previous threadson this subject point to one thing - use stock filter item, nothing better - putting a few holes in the box will NOT add hp just more noise!

I have experimented with this on the SC and have determined I achieve the same RPM at the same location on the track in any of three configurations all with a new paper filter: stock air box cover, no air box cover, and drilled air box cover. The drilled air box cover does produce a significantly faster sound at WOT. Unfortunately, I had only one spare cover to experiment with, and thus am unable to tune the pitch. A K&N insert provided no improvement over a new stock paper filter.

hI,
I have drilled the holes in my box, and found no difference in noise.
