I occassionally check out the other boards to see if there is anything interesting to read. There is almost always something on the 996TT board that makes me think life is better with lots of money (even though I know this is not so) -

Like being born to wealthy parents? Let's ask them how many made it on their own or how many are over their heads in debt!
Sorry for the sarcasim, however I work in the financial industry and find that there is a very, very large amount of "old" money that is passed on to kids who enjoy those toys, unbelievable homes, second homes, third homes, who vacation and travel more than stay at home who have never really worked much to "earn" it. Not to say that there are many who did make it on their own (I know many of them as well). Personally, I try not to compare and worry about the haves vs. the have nots (of which I am one.....). Oh well, enjoy what you can afford, be happy, work hard at what you love doing, be honest and dream.....who know's, dreams do come true - sometimes...

Jim

Hey, there are plenty of people on the "Kia" site that wish they had the wealth to get into the SC or Carrera club.
My '87 may not be a spankin' new turbo, but it's pretty damn nice!

No matter how you cut it, it takes a lot of $$$ to be able to play at those levels. You're way past sneaking a few bucks out of dad's wallet at night. I guess if you got it....flaunt it.
The only annoying aspect about this is that it seems that it's no different modding up a 996 as it is a Honda. You know, on on occasion the factory gets it right heaven forbid - Carbon fibre dashes and headlight ***** w/ clear turn signals and silver hood crest's? Jeezus. That carbon - fiber and machined aluminum and aftermarket mods everywhere looks and screams RICE. Don't care how much it costs that s#$t is ugly. That's trim you're talking about, not a mod. However a RUF turbo?
Now there's a MAN'S car.
Flame away!

I hold little sympathy for the "po' folks" and "have nots" here who own 911s, and little resentment toward those who inherited wealth. If wealth is that important, we should be more careful in choosing our parents.

Once you are past meeting life's basic needs, then "quantity has a quality all its own" seems to rule our behavior. Wealth accumulation is the means to achieve some desired end, or (for some) just to keep score.
Of course there are examples where "life is better" is not the case for the wealthy, but I assume that if we are to be unhappy, we still prefer to be wealthy.
I observe more hardworking entrepenuers & professionals with expensive Porsches than I do those "of the manor-born", but then I don't hang out in the Hampton's.

It is like anything else really, the easier it is to have the less you appreciate it. When I was in graduate school my wife and I used to have contests with friends to see who could find the best bottle of wine for $5 or less. I remember drinking some really nice wines in that price range and agonizing over spending the $5. Now $5 is a meaningless amount to me.
I like to read a lot of the different boards here and think that someone could write a really interesting socio-economic paper based on these postings. This board (the 911 board) seems to be filled with true enthusiasts that really love these cars. Not to say that the 993 and 996 boards don't have plenty of enthusiasts, it just seems they are more diluted as the price of the car goes up (which seems a bit counter-intuitive to me).
In any event, I was just having a bit of fun noticing the differences in concerns among the boards.

Echoing a few of the other comments, I've found, at least in my life, money is not everything. Now, you may say a 23 year-old graduate student such as myself who owns a Porsche has no room to talk, but I am by no means independently (or dependently for that matter) wealthy. I say, if you've got a good family life and good friends, that's the secret to happiness. Does my 911 make me happy - well, yes, it does, at least when I get to drive it. Could I be happy without it - sure. Would I be happier if I had a brand new GT2 - no, not really. It would be enjoyable, no doubt about that, but it wouldn't make up for the happiness I get from family and friends.
Ask yourself this question - would you rather be driving around in a GT2 on Christmas day or be with family and friends?
