Default 1988 cab questions

First let me preface this by saying that I will do more searches, and so apologize if this is like beating a dead cat. I frequent the 993 board (have a C4S), but ran into a nice 1988 cab and am considering picking it up. This is a low mile car, black on black, 39k miles. Clutch replaced at 35k by the current owner, apprently all records, services done and recorded. I have not yet done a PPI, but would obviously do one prior to purchase. Car is black on black, power top, AC, etc..

I am fairly familiar with 993s, but not with the earlier iterations of the 911. Basic questions -

1. What kind of price range is reasonable?
2. 5 most important things to check in this particular model?

Any guidance is appreciated, and I am going to do lots of searching when work is done!

Thanks.

88 cab is a great car. I have a 87 cab with 55K on the odometer. As far as price I would guess in the upper 20's, possibly low 30 if the car is in great condition and with the low miles. The biggest item on the G-50 trans cars (87-89) is the potential for valve guide wear, resulting in increased oil consumption and blue smoke. I am not sure how or if you can check for that. Considering that it has the auto top you may want to have it looked over as when they fail they seem to go "big". Look for regular oil changes, valve adjustment approx. every 12 - 15K miles. 15" wheels were std in 87, not sure if they upgraded to 16" in 88. 16" seem to have more choices of tires available.
Good luck.

Not sure about the Cab version of 88, but I just purchased a 88 Targa w/ 47k miles for 27,500. I just finished up my lease on a 99 96 C2 and decided I liked the older Carerras more. More soul.

PPI is a must Compression and leak down - as others have said look for regular oil changes and valve adjustments and drive that beast!

If this car is indeed priced at or above $30,000, keep in mind that this type of money gets you into a decent (or excellent) 964. A 964 may not be what you are looking for and it's been argued that the G-50 Carrera's are more desireable. But, it's an option you might not have thought about if you're willing to spend $30k on an older 911.

I agree with others. The 1980's were very good years for 911's. Very solid and reliable cars with few major weak points.

The low mileage may or may not be a benefit - it depends on what the car is going to be used for. Many feel that driven cars (i.e. mid level mileage 70-100k) are better if they are going to be driven because suddenly using a garage princess a lot could uncover / bring about unrecognized / unanticipated problems. If you want a museum (or concours) piece then maybe thats what you want.

Are you willing to say what the asking price is? IMO I would consider $30k too much for that MY car - I would think under $20k would be a good deal and $27k is max - but if its more than that and what you're after (mileage, color, etc) then go for it and good luck!

I hear you about the miles and the associated issues. I have had a great luck with my current Porsche (97 C4S, bought 2 years ago with 11k miles), but this particular cab is pretty low for the year. In the last 2 years it has been driven 10k miles by the current (PCA type) owner. So wither it is not the right car for him, or the driving has uncovered something, I have to investigate further. I have not yet put in the time to ferret that out.

The ask is very high, around 31k. I have been looking, and one can likely get a '95 993 for close to that (35 give or take, admittedly with some more miles), and so the purchase of the 1988 car would also depend on the price coming into a lower range.

We will see. The day before yesterday I had an obscene and unsolicited offer for my C4S, and am trying to figure out what to do - I love the car, but it is also one hell of an offer, so I at least have to consider it. Until I figure that out, this particular cab is on the back burner...

Thanks, again.

beware of those "obscene and unsolicited offers" - unless the cash is in hand (or at least a deposit is given) they may not actually materialize!

A Porsche in the garag is worth 2 on the lot.....(particularly if you know its history) ;-))

Just throwing this out there - but what do you think a 54,000 mile 1987 Cab would go for - diamond blue - full leather marine blue - al reed polished fuchs - 16x8 951's and 16 x 9's. paint a 9.5 out of 10 - interior a 9.5 out of 10. Just wondering, I might have a lead on a low mile Turbo...

Jeremy:

If your car was a coupe, I'd trade ya!

Seriously, in my area in spring, you'd get $26,000 to $28,000 all day long and it would take all of about 5 minutes to sell it. As soon as 3.2's come up for sale at dealerships here, they are gone within a day or two.

there is an old saying, "step up, or get out of line" an excellent car with low miles will always have a buyer. With these cars in dwindling numbers, I (and most of us) would pay a little more to have a car with low mileage in excellent condition, even if it wasn't the exact colors that one wanted.

I didn't really want a Targa, but it was so rediculously clean and had all the right options, plus the fact it fell in my lap, I couldn't say no.

But....remember the other old saying...."there is an *** for every seat"
Here is a pic of my seat.....

That's what I was thinking - $26-$28 - sorry no coupes (unless it's a Turbo)
