Default VIN descrepancy - A-Pillar vs. Sugglers Box

Hi all -

Just looked at a '73.5 911 T (with CIS) that is REALLY clean with 55K original miles. The interior aged, but nicely intact and very original. It even has A/C woith the S trim package. I want this car!

The A-Pillar VIN matches the VIN plate on the bumper under the front hood - 9113 102617

BUT....

The smugglers box VIN (under the trunk carpet that accesses the steering linkage) says 9112 102898.

Shouldn't these match? Is there an rational explanation that suggests it might be a legitimate difference?

Any help ASAP (within 30 minutes?) greatly appreciated, as another buyer gets it, not me.

If you want to talk offline and don't mind a phone call, I'll be glad to call you or feel free to call me at 916-730-4420.

TIA,

Buzz

It could be collision repair with welded-in section(s).

I don't believe there's any way the car would leave the factory like that.

nope, its had a clip welded on from the sounds of it. no big surprise
I once had a 993 in my shop that the vin in the spare tire well didn't match the a pillar, I ran it through DCS and despite it being a silver 98C4S in the middle, the front from the dash forward and down once left the factory arena red on a 95 cab!

Thanks all for the help on this. I did not buy the car. Amazing what some some people can do with a blowtorch and some skill.

Looks like it was front metal from a 72 U.S. 911T Targa.

Nope, the clip came from a '72 T coupe. The sixth digit is a 0 which is a coupe, if it was a 1 then it would be a targa.

You Sir, are correct. I had a malfunction at the brain/keyboard junction.
