Looking for chassis number

Looked at a 1980 911 targa recently for purchase but couldn't find a chassis number in the "smuggler" compartment area. Found the 10 digit vin number there. VIN matches the one in the window. Other cars I've looked at have had them (including one that was a Canadian import). Anyone have any guesses on why this was? Does it point to any potential problems?
Also since it's a 1980, I couldn't find the cars history on carfax. Any other way to find out info? Would appreciate any knowledge that you can share. Hoping to be a 911 owner soon, but want to find a good one!

You can call Porsche customer service at 800-PORSCHE, give them the VIN, and they can tell you the options that were shipped with it, and the interior and exterior colors. They don't know what the option codes stand for, however, under the Rennlist 'general' forum there is an option code decoder. That at least establishes the base vehicle for you. Can't help with history, beyond looking over the owners receipts file.

its on the body between the smugglers box and gas tank on the right side, stamped in the body itself.
the options can be obtained from porsche or if your car has the build sheet in the warranty book or under the hood still.
