Good post above. I would bet that the Boxster will turn out to be the modern 944. Loved by their faithful followers and probably pretty solid over all (though I still think a 944 is much better built than a modern Boxster), but as these 986's age, it might cost more to fix an older, high mile, neglected car than to initially purchase it. Plus, they are all soft tops and that will always be more expensive to repair or replace...

I'll be really interested to see how these 986's and 996's (at least the early year cars) hold up over time. Will all those cheap plastic interiors disintegrate over time? Will those motors go 150,000 miles max and then have to be rebuilt? Sorry to get OT...

I bet the '89 Speedster will be one of the few collectible 3.2 cars...

OK - Not my car - and just copying from the local paper/Flyer - but for you LOW mileage 3.2 folks out there - G-50 1987 Carrera 30K miles (man I thought my mileage was low at 53,000) - Guards Red "Already a Classic" "cream puff" 727-372-6368. He's asking $30K - original in all aspects.

Anyway - again - not my car - I could probably take a look if someone is interested -

coupe or cab? I would hope a cab for that price and Guards red is an excellent color, I would still beat him over the head with a bat and try to get it for less, but these are so rare your better off buying something like this, at a price like that, if you can, and just enjoy a super clean car.

Coupe or cab? I'd like to know as well. I would guess he would take a little less if asking is 30K. Sounds like a good buy to me if it's truly clean. FWIW, I have been offered 30K for my triple black 86' cab with 34K miles. I know it's not worth that much but I am still not selling. My car is a known entity and I am not interested in making a few thou, and have to search for a replacement.

Sorry - I don't know - and didn't call. I just passed it on because there are less and less of these low miles cars around.

$30K sounds pricey to me, but what comes out of these discussion is that prices are all over the freaking place... I see very nice cars also going for $14k.... (which I would condsider shockingly low)are we talking about the same cars here?

Condition seems to be the driver here... and I mean very small differences in condiion....good clean run of the mill cars (and I mean NICE cars... not scruff boxes) with 100K+ miles seem mired in the mid-high teens, but exceptional cars with very low mileage and G-50s seem to be in their own price class.... apparently there is a class of buyer thats prepared to pay 25% more for a car thats 5% nicer....

Its the same price assymmetry you get in antiques, oriental rugs, etc... there does seem to be a "collector" mentality forming around these super low mile cars.... ...one you can't explain away based on utility.... a 35K mile 3.2 is simply not that much better than a super-maintained 120K car...its like they are two different cars.

. . . and all the upgrades and improvements in the world will have little difference on the car's value.

Interesting thoughts - is some ambitious soul out there going to compile this info and draft a piece for a future issue of Panos or Excellence!? B. Anderson quotes his "Current Market values" - perhaps there's a need for a "Crystal Ball Price Guide" or "Crystal Ball Market Values" - 2009 and beyond!

Speculation and intuition- Gotta love it-

This is interesting since I just bought one and will probably be at that mileage in 2009.

I think they will be around 18-20k.
