Default Tires for 82 SC

Any recomendations for R Compound tires for an 82 SC. Stock 15 inch rims. I've not been able to find anything in the stock 185/70-15 size for the front.

Thanks.

As tire sizes are moving up, selection becomes worst on smaller rims. Consider buying a set of 16" Fuchs. On stock 6" and 7" rims (optional size on the 911SC), the factory sizes of 205/55x16 and 225/50x16 are more widely available in "R" compound.

A good question to ask. Bill summarized very well. If you are like many, changing brakes and bigger rubber, might as well jump to 17s, but as Bill suggested 16s are more available then 15s. 225/245 combination works and fits on an SC, but that choice in 15s is only available in Hoosiers - go to 16s and there are more choices. Shave your fender lips and it is possible to go to 245/275 combination with careful selection of offset, but it will be tough to get the tires up to temp. You might have an intermediate step -- move the 15X7s to the front and use 225/50-15 (Kuhmo, Yoks, Toyos, Hoosiers, MPSC) and procure some 16X8 or 9 for the rear and use a 245/45-16. Cheap solution and works well with stock brakes.

I am not sure where you are on the learning curve. If you have few track days you will learn more sliding all over the place on street tires. Track tires have a much more radical departure. I think my MPSCs have turned to stone and now will slide very easily and predictably. SC folks seem to have really good results with Toyos for DE. MPSCs seem to work better on heavier cars.

I use MPSC's on Fuchs 15x7&8 205/50 and 225/50. These are short sidewalls which help with lower gearing at the track.

Absolutely go with the 16" Fuchs.... they are very strong, and you can find tons of scruffy ones that are 100% sound real cheap (except for 9" which tend to be a bit pricy in any condition) fine for track if money is an issue.

8s and 9s are perfect for an SC

You will want a second set of wheels anyway. R compound tires stink on the street... they ride hard and can be downright dangerous in cold or bad weather.

I also agree that if you are just starting out, use high performance street tires on the track... much better for learning, and much more durable... still I would keep a dedicated set of track tires if you drive the car on the street alot.... track really beats the tires up.

To clarify that....911 8's don't work on the 911SC front, however, 944 offset 8's do work. However, with 225x16's, there can be tire rub which may require rolling/cutting the fender lip and increasing front camber. This is disucssed in the 911SC FAQ on tech.rennlist.com.

Thanks for the clarification on the front wheels.... I have so many wheels I get confused sometimes.... DOH!...... 225 on 8s work fine on my SC... but I do have very stiff suspension and maxed out camber.... so I would consider that to be a track setup.

Thanks for the info... yes.. 16's are in the future... I've really wanted to go with one of the DOT legal R compound tiers. Even in high end street compounds the selection STINKS big time at the 15's. This car is more for track than street (i use my 993 as my daily driver) so I'm not overly concerned about wear.... I'm curious if 17" wheels off a 993 will work, cuz I have a line on a set of scruffy ones that would be perfect for this (500 bucks for a set seems pretty reasonable to me)...

I am not 100% sure, but I really doubt 993 wheels will work... the offsets on the later cars are way different.... you would probably have to use spacers of some sort, and may have to change the studs... I expect they are available, but by the time you are done, you will have spent some bucks. Other than that, 17" wheels will fit if you reduce the tire profile accordingly

Thanks for all the advice... When talking to my mechanic today, he made me a deal on 6 rims, plus a new set of tires... So I'm all set with 16's
