G50 Gearbox Noises
Well, I received very little response on the eMail list so I'll try it here...
A few weeks ago, I had a new clutch kit installed on my '87 Targa. (OEM with updated, non-rubber-centered disc). The car drives great, but now the gear noise from the tranny is very noticeable whenever accelerating.
Have any of you experienced this after a new clutch installation or should I be very worried?
(Of course, I'm going to double check the fluid level ASAP)
Thanks

At what RPM do you notice the noise?
The reason I ask is that the engine will tend to lug and vibrate to a degree at lower RPMs (below about 3k), and this vibration is often experienced as increased gear chatter. Shifting into a lower gear (and thus operating the engine in its power band) will alleviate this ... and greatly increase throttle response!

Had the same thing on my 87. Changed the fluid to Redline synthetic(Swepco is also recommended) and the noise was greatly reduced. I've been told that the G50 gearbox is well known as a rattler, not harmful but can be annoying.

I think most 87-89 911s with G-50 gearbox "rattle" a little bit at low rpms. Not being a mechanical expert myself, several P-mechanics have told me its nothing to worry about and that they all sound like that - they weren't made for low rpms!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, the gearbox has always 'rattled' when I lugged it, but now it's making the same noise under acceleration, so we're talking about low RPMs up to around 4K.
Sounds like a fluid change is in order.

There was a mod for the shift rod rattle in late 1987. If it is shift rod rattle, and may partially be, I suggest you replace the bushings under the shift rod up front. Part of the mod was also to put a large o-ring over the shifter just in front of the coupler in front of the rear seats. The o-ring is something like 3 inches in diameter and the diameter of the rubber is approximately 1/4 inch round. You have to disconnect the rod from the coupler to get the o-ring over it. O-ring is then fastened to the heater wire metal sheathing with a plastic tie. This dampens the vibration/rattling on the shifter as it goes up the rod.
I did this fix on my 87 Carrera and it worked very well. On my current 88 Carrera the fix was incorporated into the production line. On the 88 Carrera, I had a little noise, but changing the two bushings up front corrected it. Hope this helps.
