Default 82sc tranny question

Hello everyone, this is my first post on the 911 board and surely not my last.

I have questions regarding an 82 sc which am purchasing for my father.
I am familiar with many cars, however, I have no experience with porsches. (This excludes a 944S i purchased a while back.)

I am wondering about the throw between gears one and two.
Is it usual to be farther than the remaining gears?
This is my main concern in the car.

Also are there any other areas which i should look into that i wouldn't have originally thought of?

Another thought that crossed my mind was the reliability/easier shifting of the G50 Is this conversion [relatively] simple for a mechanically inclined enthusiast?(are the ratios better? or would this be a pointless conversion?)

Your advise is greatly appreciated,
Ben Goldstein

The throw on the 915 are long, especially 1st and 2nd - it will also likely feel a lot sloppier than your 944. This is normal but things can be improved by making sure the linkages are adjusted properly and the bushings are new, or a factory short shift. Better would be to add WEVO or other shift upgrades. Adding a G50 would be so difficult and expensive that it would be stupid, imo - better to spend the money for a G50-equipped model.

The factory short shift is easy to install, and does make a difference. Renewing the bushings, including the cup the shifter itself sits in and the joint under the rear floor in front of the rear seats also makes a difference in feel.

The 915 tranny on this car naturally feels vague with longer throws than other cars... but works just fine once you get used to it and learn the proper technique.

Personally, I am not a big fan of short-shift kits... all they do is reduce the space between the gates... increasing the possibility of a missed shift into the wrong gear... but this is purely a personal preference

The throw between 1st and 2nd should not be significantly longer than between 3rd and 4th.... (they are both relatively long by modern day car standards).

Re-doing the bushings, adding a better coupler and proper adjustment will help alot... these cars are going on 20 years old, so wear is always an issue.
