Is this a good buy???
My research suggests yes, but i would appreciate your opinions.
I am buying this for my father but unfortunately i am in GA and he is in MN so i cannot look at the car myself, however this is the info my father gave me.

82 sc
120k miles
OK paint, could use paint job (couple of 1/2in rust bubbles on rear deck/minor door dings/rock chips in front)
Decent interior (includes 2 add. recaros one with some wear + rs door panels)
engine is clean with no oil leaks a bunch of gaskets and seals have been replaced not too long ago, but nothing else leakdown test 5k ago showed about 5% on all cyl.
Engine runs well and the entire car appears to be in good mechanical shape

He is asking 12K$ for it but will negotiate

Your advice is greatly appreciated
Thank you
Ben Goldstein

NOt easy to see but I believe that these cars were prone to rust behind the headlights - you might want to just remove that and look behind before you buy.

If it has a sunroof it might leak - look for evidence of that.

Alternators were supposed to only last 40,000 miles on that so ask when it was last replaced and whether it was upgraded at that time.

Should be able to buy a pristine SC for about $14K... paint job will run $6K+/- if it is done properly. There should be no rust on an SC... rust bubbles would definately deserve more attention as to some more serious underlying issue...

120k miles would not bother me if the engine was maintained and checked out.

Generally speaking a "scruffy" car costs just as much to re-do as a ratty car, since everything has to be done anyway. If you are happy with the car in its current condition, fine. If you plan to "fix it up", I would spend a few $K more for a really clean car.

Just my 2 cents

$10,000 to $12,000 seems fair for a well running, average cosmetic condition SC. The location of the car plays into pricing as well.

I would definitely budget $1000 to $2000 per year in maintenance and repair costs for this car. Those amounts also depend on how much use (and what type of use) this car will get.

Good Luck,
Jay
