Default Crazy Question for 1983 SC Owners

Out of left field....What is the factory correct color for the "911SC" badge on the rear decklid of the car? I have a 1983 Ruby Red SC, and the badge was a pewter/silver color when I bought it. I've seen pictures of quite a few other cars like mine, some in the same color, and their badges lok to be the same shade.

A well-know Porsche bodyshop, whose owner happens to be a respected concours expert with PCA, saw the badge and declared blasphemy! He said they were all black, but that they had a habit of fading to the silver color. I therefore had mine changed to black. Now I'm not sure, though, after seeing a few more badges in a metal color. All seaches for parts show only black replacement badges. So what's the scoop? Was it a dealer thing to paint the badges, or popular DIY for owners? Or are they all just faded? Or wre some pewter from the factory?

Default Badge color

I had understood that they were anodized black but the anodizing turned liter over time.

Well, this may be of some help. I just pulled a sales pamphlet from 1982 for the car line up for th year. It shows a red coupe, red targa, and copper brown targa. All of them from the picture show a black badge. There is also a 1978 brochure that shows all cars having black. From what I have seen, I think the black just fades over time...like the window frames. Just go drive your car so fast that the crazy badge falls off! You know there was a badge delete option as well ( M 498 ) Make em wonder and makes the waxing all that much easier

I think I remember that one option on the sc was not to have any badge at all. I not sure. I do know that anodizing that is exposed to direct sunlight will fade if it is colored.

I have a Red '83 that also has the pewter color badge. I definitely dont think the sun could have faded myne because all my other black trim (around the windows) is still intact.

Default Badge color

If a part is anodized and pigment or color is added, the color may fade at different rates depending on the alloy of the part and the color. Eventhough the color fades the anodized coating still remains.

Maybe the window frames and the badge are made from different alloys

There were two colors, at least in my '83 dealer catalog. Dark colored cars got light bading, light colors got black badging.

The Targa badging on my 84 has the same issue... they look silver-grey, but there is no part number for anything but black. Of course sometime the replacement parts are simplified to reduce inventory costs, but I came away believing that it was sunfade of some sort.
