Yeah, all that poor guy wanted to know was if he should buy the car for $1500 and I went and got his thread off track. Oops. :-)

I hadn't really thought about an SC like JCP911S suggested although I could probably find one in my price range. I just really have a place in my heart for the early cars. I had a '72T for about a year and sold it, and it's the only car that I've ever owned that I regretted selling. It was a basket case, but at least it had character.

My GTI is a blast to drive, but it's just somehow not the same as driving a piece of automotive history.

There is a company down the road from me and there's a guy (could be a gal I guess) that drives a 356 coupe to work and it's in the parking lot EVERY day. Haven't paid attention if he drives it when it's raining, but damn that is SO cool.

L8, just to stir the pot more, this car was posted to the Pelican site today:

L8,

That car on Pelican is the one you want... or one just like it. As a data point I paid almost that much 12 years ago for a car not nearly as good as this one appears to be.

An example like that, or a clean SC and you can't lose.

Yep. I like it. Ah like it ah lot.

The seller e-mailed me some more pics and the car is SHARP. And for that price I can have it shipped. Shipping looks to be about $900.

I requested right to first refusal and also asked for a PPI reference in the area.

The rust bubbles are the only drawback, also the car used to be green which is starting to show some places in the wheel wells per the seller.

But for a daily driver, who could ask for a better car? Although I did look at some SC's and an '84 Carrera last night online. They just don't have the patina of this car. (Is patina a word?)

Don't do anything because some schmuck on the internet with no skin in the game told you to, but given your stated objectives and budget something like this T fits the bill. At this price you will still have a few thousand cash to address issues... you should be able to get a nice T that is 95% right and a nice driver right out of the box for this kind of money... this may or may not be that car... but if it passes a throrough PPI by a knowlegeble specialist, there is not reason it can't be.

As tempting as that S sounds, IMHO it is way outside the budget... sure, it could be the deal of the century, but realistically, you could blow through your entire $13K budget and may not even have a car you can drive... and if you try to sell a half-restored car, you can really get hosed...

A 95% T will always be worth roughly what they are asking....so if you decided to move up in the future, you probably won't get hurt... just be patient and hold out for a really solid car.

Good luck

I spoke to the seller at length and he has only had the car a couple of months. He bought it from the owner of Bob Hindson Racing in Kansas City and had it shipped to Oregon. Remember that blue 911E that started this thread??? It has been serviced by Bob Hindson racing and that's the mechanic that I talked to about it.

Word is that some guy brought this car into Bob Hindson Racing and had the carbs rebuilt. The tab was like $1000 and he didn't have the money so he told them to sell the car and get their cut and give him the rest. So I'm preparing to call them up and get a little more info on the history of the car.

I think the current seller bought it so he could resell it on the West coast and make a little cash. He's retired and he said this is the 5th Porsche in his garage. He also e-mailed me a pic of a '66 911 with low original miles that he has.

Also, that $400 PPI that I mentioned for the blue car on page 1? That was from Bob Hindson. The PPI for this black car in Oregon is going to be $155 including the compression test from a place called Stuttgart Automotive. That's much more reasonable. Who can afford to pay $400 for a PPI if they're looking at multiple cars?

Too bad the car had to go to Oregon and now back to the midwest! If the PPI turns up good then I'm going to be purchasing this one.

And, I won't do anything just because someone else has said "that's the car for you." I love black cars and the tan leather looks nice. My Audi is black on charcoal and I've also owned 2 black Hondas and a black Mitsubishi. The car appears to be straight as a board and also appears to be stone cold reliable. Just what I'm looking for.

The only way I would be happier were if it was a '72.

I just spoke with Bob Hindson Racing (BHR) in K.C. Get this, they sold this black '70T to its current owner for $7500 two months ago. Now the current owner has brought it to the west coast and is asking $10,900 for it. What a deal. BHR said that the guy bought it over the phone without even looking at it. BUT, he did say that it was a good car and it was probably worth $11,000, he's just not in the business of selling cars so he sold it just to get his money out of it for the repair.

The car wasn't being advertised for sale at the time, but somehow this guy ended up with it after hearing about it from a friend of a friend of a friend....

Unfortunately I think the car is worth $10,900 plus the cost to ship it. If only I'd been able to pick it up in K.C. That's only 3 hours from here! It just hurts knowing that this guy paid so little for it and it was in my area and NOW I'll be paying him a premium for it. But I guess it's at market value. If I don't pay $10,900 for it someone else will...

BHR also said that in his opinion, the blue 911E is only about a $9,000 car. It needs tires, scheduled maintenance, and the tranny needs totally gone through. AND he's concerned about the rust in the passenger side front fender. I really wasn't planning on paying $11,250 for it anyway because with the transmission work I'd overshoot my budget.

L8:
The light blue car looks just like a car my dad looked at in 1990. He wasn't a big fan of the color so he passed. Was the car ever in MD?

That 72S would be cool, but like the others have said, it could turn into a money pit fairly quickly. Water stains on the headliner make you wonder where the water went.

Yes, I've written off the '72 S although someone on another thread asked me for the seller's name and number so I need to e-mail those to him.

Not sure where the '70E was prior. The PO of the current owner was a bachelor in K.C. who owned this car, a 996, a Ferrari, and a Viper. That guy was the one that put all of the money into the engine and suspension. I'm not sure where it was previously but after discovering how these cars move around, it very well could have been in Maryland!

Some of the best deals are found through Porsche mechanics, I've learned, and the BHR story isn't unusual. Some of the old-timers with networking skils have it all over us newcomers - especially the 356 guys, about the most insular group of Porsche owners I've encountered.

L8.... just being picky, but when you get the PPI, ask the guy to give particular attention to the colorchange issue. To do a colorchange properly, you really have to pull all the seals off, yank the motor, etc, etc....BIG $$$. If they just taped it off, you can see the old color underneath.... boo.

Not trying to throw water on this at all, but an obvious color change can adversely affect the resale of the car.

The 911E I found on a website called www.cars.com. Just do a search for the year. It says the ad was placed on 8/4/04 I believe.

I talked to the seller of the black car and he said that he paid $9,500 for the car plus he had it shipped to Oregon at a cost of $950. He also said he had a copy of the cancelled check showing that was what he paid. I'm really indifferent. If the car turns out to be clean and straight and runs as good as it looks I think he's asking a reasonable amount.

I'm on top of the color change deal. I asked the owner what color it was up under the dash and he said he didn't know. He said the only place you can tell it was green is up in the wheelwells where there are rock chips, but I'm not too concerned about that. I can buy undercoating cheap from Eastwood. BUT I will be talking to the mechanic about this issue because I agree that it is a big deal that will effect the value of the car if it wasn't done properly. .

The '72T I had was light yellow and it was color matched in all of those areas. But it had been repainted once...

I agree with an6drew - I think the longhoods weren't painted body color in the engine bay, trunk, or wheel wells.
