Post 89 Coupe check please...

Ladies and Gents,
I'm getting ready to purchase my first 911 (finally got the go-ahead from the wife!) and would like some advice from you smart 911 craniums. I'm looking at a Met. Blue 89' Carrera Coupe, VIN#WPOAB0918KS120081. The car has 146K, good looking tan leather, Fuschs, Bilsteins, CD, F&R spoilers. The car has been repainted (looks like a good job) and the dealer has worked on the car since it was new, w/ all service records back to 1989. No rust, rebuilt fuel pump, and generally good condition throughout. I drove the vehicle for about 30 minutes and noticed no problems, however, I plan on getting a PPI thanks to reading all the 911 posts. Any advice on price, problems with this year, or in general would be appreciated. He's asking $22,900.
Thanks,
Todd D.

Todd,

In the August 2001 Excellence, Bruce Anderson gives the values for a poor/good/excellent 1989 coupe as $19,907/$22,634/$30,300. The mileage on the one you're looking at is high. Normally you look for, again according to Monsieur Anderson, about 7K-9K/year. That would set an expectation of around 84K-108K. So, the price paid should reflect an adjustment of 10% for high mileage (which may already be taken into account in the asking price). Some might also deduct for a repaint (seems soon to be needing a repaint...was it in an accident?) While we all have to decide what to spend our money on, some might opt for a new fuel pump instead of a rebuilt. Look over the maintenance records to ensure you're comfortable with the quality of other work done. Of course get the PPI done by someone else besides the dealer that's done the maintenance.

1989 911's are a good year; some would say the 1987-1989's are the best of the 1965-1989 911's.

The VIN tells you it's a 1989 US 911 coupe built in Stuttgart, chassis number 81 out of 1156 brought into the US. Specs are 217 hp, 265 Nm torque, 9.5:1 compression ratio, weighs 1250 kg or about 2750 lbs. The engine number would be 64K00001 and higher, the engine type is 930/25 (stamped on the engine to the right of the fan), and the transmission is a G50/01.

There was a technical bulletin regarding a modified clutch release lever shaft bearing that went into production April 6, 1989, which means it likely wasn't on the 911 when it was made. This changes the clutch release bearings. It's recommended that this update be applied when doing transmission or clutch repairs. If the clutch has been replaced, you might look to see if this update was noted on the repair order - look for part number 999.201.339.00 which is the new needle bearing.
