Question 1982 SC Wheel upgrade...

So, in the midst of an ebay scammer trying to extort more money out of me for an RS tail I won at auction...(the seller is demanding (asking) for $100- more than the auction drew for the tail)...I was walking around my still tailless Targa looking for some cosmetic/performance upgrades and my Fuchs jumped out at me. So, I have decided to look at upgrading from the stock 7&8's (16") Fuchs to perhaps the later Turbo Twist (17'') for an appearance/performance upgrade. I know this has been played out before, but I did a seach and came up empty. Any ideas regarding fittment and or alternate wheels to consider would be much appreciated. It is so far a basically stock 1982 SC Targa.

I put a set of these on my 78 when they first came out. Looked great and drove better.

I assume you mean the BBS LM's or the 17" Turbo Twists? Did you have any problems with the fit or offset? I'd love to see a picture if you have one anywhere. Thanks for the info though.

Any other ideas out there?

eh, I'm not a fan of later wheels on the earlier cars but its your ride, as far as the scammer, post his email address up here and let your fellow car enthusist friends handle it from there

If you add a tail, don't forget to add the rubber front valance extension, if it's not on there already. Paul Frere documented in his book 'Porsche 911 Story' the effects of using various combintations of tails and valances. On the pre-964's, the factory never sold a tail without an aerodynamically balancing front valance extension.

However, on wheels, stock 16" Fuchs on the SC are 6's and 7's. Fuchs offsets are 6=36mm, 7=23mm, and 911 8's=10.6 (944 8's=23mm), and while we're here, for completeness, 9=15mm.

If you were to look at Turbo twists, take their offset, subtract the above, and you'll know what size spacer you'll need, ie 52mm minus 23mm would require a 29mm spacer, plus longer studs, unless you use something like the H&R spacers with built in studs.

If you find a set of wheels in SC offsets, as opposed to later offsets, you'll be better off. Adding spacers, while neccessary in some cases, adds weight to an area where lighter is better.

Fuchs 7&8x16s are not stock and most SC owners would give their rightwingnut for a set. Other than maybe finding a pair of 9x16 for the rears, you've got looks and performance covered. However, looks are subjective and some like Gotti/Ronal or BBS for a period look upgrade. I think C2 wheels look good, too but not all agree. Look around but remember that all those TurboTwister 17s are on the market for some reason. 17s also take much more expensive tyres than the 16s.

John et al,
I do like the look of the 17's on the SC though I was worried about fender clearance. It is currently stock height, with regard to suspension etc. I was considering lowering the car to euro ride height. So... I'm still all over the map. My current Fuchs are 7's and 8's from the factory in need of refinishing, but I'm sure they're worth a few bucks on the open market. I'd like to go to 8's and 9's if at all possible, though not a necessity. I do appreciate the advice though, so please keep it coming.

Go down the Rennlist and you'll see my request for info on rear wheel spacers. I didn't get any direct help, but there is a post that includes directions to an older discussion on wheel fitments - might help.

Angry I don't know what happened...

??? I don't know what happened. I assume that if it was deleted by a mod/admin I'd at least get a pm...

I posted a link to an ebay auction for a set of 17" turbo twists with SC offsets. I also posted the offsets for my 17x7/17x9 wheels.

I also posted a note about test fitting (weds pm is out) and my warranty.

I'll pm details (the kidlins are going to bed)

Sorry I don't have any digital pics of that car.
The LM's are 17x7 and 17x9.5 I did have to rool the fender lips to make them work but it was worth the effort.

I'm happy with the replica Mille Milglia 'twists' I have on my modified SC. Only disadvantage is they are heavier than Fuchs. Sizes are 7.5 x 17" and 9.0 x 17", thay are shod with Khumo Ecstas and came complete with the correct offset. I have experienced no wing fouling issues.

A note on the Mille Miglias. I have them on my Carrera because of the 993TT brakes I have. There weakness is that the center bend easily because they are soft compared to the Fuchs. One good pothole will do it.

In my opinion, since you have 7s and 8s, refinish them (maybe even paint the centers to match your car) and throw a Carrera tail and front chin spoiler on the car.

If you want to put 8s on the front, you'll need the 951 8 inch Fuchs 23mm offset (they have a 951 part number). The 911 8s will not fit in front.

Of course my car is a lot lighter than stock, I have no problems with distorted wheels and I've hit many potholes, they are EVERYWHERE in the UK. The wheels have been on the car for three years now.

I know there's a bit of an "authenticity-bias" in this forum and folks have been very polite in not chiding me for having switched out the original fuchs rims to those seen below. But I've been thrilled with them, both appearance and performance-wise... and I get many comments on the newness of the car from ordinary observers. Granted, they aren't "addicts" or "specialists" or "enthusiasts."
As for Porsche-made updating, I like the turbo-twist and the Cup wheels the best, but not so much the C2s on an 80s Carrrera... that's just personal preference, however.
And definitely make sure you get the front air-dam, if you add the whale-tail
