Typical price of running flat-6?

I'm toying with the idea of transmogrifying my 912 into a 911 with the installation of a flat-6 (and all of the required kit) in place of my big bore 2.4L flat-4. I'm thinking either of going "stock-ish" with a 2.0/2.2/2.4L screamer from the same era as the car or going for a reliable, yet powerful, 3.0L SC engine. What I need to know is what these engines typically go for on the used market.
Any ideas?

dave,
i like your moxie man , just one problem. if youre goin for that much of an upgrade on engine, youre gonna need to take care of breaks, suspension, etc, to get the most bang out of the new engine (gotta be able to stop and controll her with the new up grade).
unless its the engine size for the same year 911 (69), which should be the same suspensiona and break, etc set up as the 912. i think that was a 2.0, so if you go that route you should be ok.(anyone else know?). personally i like the idea, and a 3.0 would be sweet
, but depending on what you do with the engine, take a look at the other necessary upgrades.. depending on what you do to it, it might be more feasable to just buy a 911.
as far as keeping the car original, forget that, its your car, make it to what you want, just as long as you enjoy and love what you do with it! purists suck why care about q-tiping and perfectly preserving the car unless its a one of a kind museum piece. (this does not mean not caring for it.. just some people go over board on origionality)

Do a search on this site....I thought I remember somebody saying it's far more expensive than its worth to transform a 912 into a 911. But then again, it HAS been done before.
I just sold a complete 2.4 T spec engine that ran but could use a rebuild for $1200. I'm going to sell my completely rebuilt 2.4 later this summer/fall. I need to research, but I'll probably try to sell that in the $3k - $5k range. I'm going to replace it with a more reliable CIS or 3.2 Motronic motor.
If you do go with an upgraded motor...definitely work out the safety issues as well!
Good luck!

My car is more than ready for the F6 engine... the suspension is a mixture of 930 parts and Weltmeister goodies and the brakes are drilled disks and calipers (etc) from a Carrera 3.2. There's a 911 CD ignition already hiding out back too.
The engine is the final step and I'm just getting giddy thinking about it!

dave,
at the south east 912 meet, our organizer steve drabant and i were talking about doin auto-x and rallies. i brought up my idea of eventually getting a 914 and putting a 911 in it. he suggested going with a subaru (if im not interested in going with a concourse type of deal).
he explained that you can get a subaru engine and a turbo to put on it etc, for less than the cost of a 911 engine. (he says 5000 will get you a 911 engine). he says people have been bolting the suby engines up to the 901 gear box, with a kit or somthing. steve works for subaru, so he would be able to tell you what you need to do, specs etc. he also said youll be able to get alot more hp than a 911 engine. sure its not porsche but its an option to consider if youre just lookin for a real fast 911 (or psudeo 911)
since im assuming youre not worried about origionality (with all your upgrades) you might wanna try that route. (NO FLAMES PLEASE -its just an option you could explore). here is his email address, hed be able to give you more detail. steve_d33@hotmail.com

It's an interesting idea... something that I'm sure no one would think of, but I do prefer to keep the car "all Porsche". Of course, my current engine is a Porschefied VeeDub mill but...

Hello:
I pulled a 2.2 liter out of my '70 911 about 5 months ago and had a 2.9liter race motor dropped in. I gave the motor to my tech in partial payment for the motor now in my car. I was just at his shop this week and he still has the motor, (now a long block, he sold the webber's to another customer) When I traded out the motor, it ran strong and had the hydrolic chain tensioner upgrade done to it some time in the past. is only asking about $1200.00 for it which should be a pretty good buy for a buyer with your needs. Still, as has already been stated, there are a lot of additional expenses if you want to do this type of upgrade properly. Passable carbs should be obtainable for around $1200 but youre gonna want a 5 speed if you have a 4speed 912. and I think most people would suggest bigger torsion bars. As for brakes, weren't the brakes the same on the 911t as the 912? I'm not sure but I think they were. If interested, e-mail me, I'll get you my guy's phone number. I know he does ship his work all over the country, so if your'e not local, that shouldn't be a big problem. As I said, it is a good running long block, There is nothing in this for me, I just thought it might be a helpful match.
