Default 1981 SC mods?

Hey all,

Sorry if this is redundant, but I searched through the forums for a bit and didn't find what i needed. My cousin picked up an 81 SC in good condition, and would like to do some work on it to up the horsepower. Nothing fancy, mind you, just a few things he could do in his spare time and add some pep. Any input would be great.

Thanks,
Chris

The basic 'bolt-ons', accordering to Bruce Anderson's 911 Performance Handbook, are to add the SSI heat exchangers with a 1974 or earlier exhaust which supposedly boost HP by 17-22. If you want to really get into it, replace the CIS injection system with a pair of carbs (not the kind everyone is trying to avoid these days) which supposedly adds another 10 HP.

FWIW, take some weight out first (oops! FIRST the pop-off valve) as it's free hp. Where are you? Emissions test area? No? Dump the cat, add a test pipe or pre-muffler and reset richness. Desperately need a/c? No? Take out 80lbs of dead weight. Otrherwise, if you want real hp, it takes real $$$.

Your cousin may want to read the 911SC FAQ at tech.rennlist.com.

Things have moved a little in the SC tuning world recently with the arrival of the CIS to EFI kit
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...&pagenumber=15
I have already fitted early HEs and a Triad 2 in 2 out exhaust and a gearbox with a 7.3:1 final drive. With the weight I've lost from the car the results are impressive. I'll be fitting the CIS to EFI after my suspension makeover.
If you are not restricted by emissions testing I would say forget the expensive cams and pistons, lose weight , fit earlty HEs and a Triad exhaust, a close ratio gearbox and the CIS to EFI kit, your car might acheive 220bhp but will feel faster because of the gearing. As Steve Weiner has already pointed out the early ring and pinion may not be reliable in the long run but I had no choice due to special circumstances.
