Post 3.0 SC alternator/regulator problem

Any of you had a voltage regulator go bad? Mine's putting out 16 volts at driving speeds, drops to normal at idle. I'm normally good with automotive electrical systems, just not too familiar with Porsches'. I've lent out my manuals and am just looking for a quick answer to where the regulator is located. Any idea how much a replacement costs? Thanks in advance for your help.

Chris, what year is your SC?? I had an '82 with a Paris Rhone (now V_____??)...I forget! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

The regulator is on the rear of the alternator, if I remember correctly it's the black plastic box?? I believe earlier SCs came with a Bosch unit.

I don't think any alternator for the SC had an external regulator...so find out what make yours is and/or take it out and most local alternator/starter shops would be able to alleviate your troubles for pennies on the dollar when compared to a rebuilt unit on the shelf.

Thanks Jeff. I don't know what year the motor is. It's a project car that the PO tried to piece together from a variety of different 911s. When I bought the car I knew nothing about Porsches so I believed him when he told me that it was an '83 motor. But it has no O2 sensor or anything that I now know an '83 has. So, I don't know. I'll just try to get the alternator out this evening and take a look at it.

Chris,

Models 84 and later I believe had the internal regulator, your's should be located next to the CD box on the driver's side in the engine compartment not on the alternator. It's a generic looking metal cube, so to speak, with plugs on the bottom.
It's possible the PO upgraded to the later Valeo alternator in which case, as Jeff said, would be evident on the rear of the alternator.

good luck !

I believe it was in 1982 when Porsche went to the internal regulator. Prior to that it was next to the CDI box.

Cool

Sorry you are getting so many different ideas. Mine is an 83, French, with internal. Seems like the regulator was around $20.

Even though the PO told me that the car has an '83 3.0, it turns out that the regulator was on the panel next to the CDI box. $45 at Perf. Prod.
