Post Engine/Transmission Rebuild

I have an '81 911 SC that has right at 125k miles on it. I am looking in to getting both the Engine and Transmission rebuilt.
I am considering having Motor Meister in CA do the job. I got a Price of $5500 including shipping, turn-key rebuild and new clutch.
Anyone out there have any experience with this shop or a suggestion of another shop that may be better?

Go over to the Rennlist email 911 and racing lists (bottom left corner click on "Go To The Main Rennlist Web Site" - You may need to join the lists to do the search) and do a search on Motor Meister.

Curious why your engine needs a rebuild. Understand the tranny, as mine's almost ready for one too. For transmission work, Gary Fairbanks has a good reputation for quality rebuilds, and is located in Norwalk, CT. He advertises in Pano and I believe Excellence.

I had motor meister do my engine a couple years ago and was not at all happy with my experience. I was also quoted $5500, ended up at just under 10k. They were my best friends until they got my money, and then my motor kept getting delayed, and they weren't real interested in talking to me. all in all it took about 6 months to get my car back on the road, of course that was after they lost my transmission and I had to fight with them until finally they admitted to losing it and sent me and a trans out of an 86 carrera which did not have the LSD I started with. Also when I got upset (I think justified) for them losing my trans they said I was lucky they weren't charging me to keep shipping the wrongs transmissions back and forth. Also they didn't provide all the different five dollar parts I needed to make the 86 trans work in my 81. Luckily I have not had any problems with my motor since rebuild. I think I just got lucky, I have talked to a couple other guys who got the same treatment except their blew up within the first couple hundred miles and they had to start the fight all over again. Both of those guys also got the $5500 quote and both ended up at just a little over 10k. The only plus is I actualy have a real strong motor. However it smokes every time I start it. In the winter it is actually embarrassing how much it smokes, I look like james bond testing my smoke screen sitting still in a parking lot, it has however taken care of my mesquito problem . If I were you I would ask the local PCA and POC guys who they trust in your area and stick with them. It will end up costing about the same and its alot easier to beat on a local door than one across the country(dont know were you live but I'm in Vegas which isn't even far from them) Good Luck, email

Just curious Mike....
How stupid/careless does a shop have to be to actually lose a transmission?

MM built me a 2.7 race motor and rebuilt my 7:31 tranny and did some suspension work - about $20k.

Overall very satisfactory experience . . . and the motor and tranny are excellent!

Check the Pelican BBS archives for a more extensive description of my experience.

Prices quoted for rebuilds are typically 'base' prices assuming your motor does not need any new or rebuilt parts or additional labor.

I think you will find that the fellow who owns this site is running a MM motor and from what I have heard and read he is pleased.

Best of luck to you!

Competition Engineering has one of best reps in US. He's not the cheapest, but he does have credability. He did my 77 2.7. DE instructors were impressed. What is not given importance with these jobs is the hand holding till you properly get it set up again in your car. You must have a clear idea of what you will be doing with engine. He may send you to other places to get cheaper prices. His receipts enhance the value of your car. No hidden costs, a class act. At least toutch base with him. If you want to gamble, go to Las Vegas. Call 1-760-379-3879, ask for Walt, tell him you spoke to Ron from NY with the cross-country go-cart...........also it is tricky to break-in these engines, many people don't seat the rings properly, but that is another story. Good Luck..............Ron
