Red face Issue regarding 911 seat height...

I'm looking for more head room in a 911SC coupe w/ sunroof...Is it possible to lower the seat level a couple of inches beyond stock - either by modification to the original seat/bracket or by installing an aftermarket seat?

Any tall, 6-3+, drivers with suggestions?

Thanks!
Markus

Markus,

I've looked into this issue quite a bit. I'm 6'4", and drive a 1987 Carrera sunroof coupe. When sitting in my stock seat (all the way down, of course), I have about 1/2" clearance above my head. That's fine for the street, but with a helmet on, this is obviously not great.

One solution that looks promising is to buy something like a Sparco Evo (or Evo II) seat and purchase the side-mount brackets. Check out OG Racing. This obviates the use of the stock sliders, so you won't be able to adjust the seat easily after you install it. OG recommends the Evo for headroom problems, and says this is good for about one more inch. The bottom cushion in the Evo seats is also removable, so for track events, you might get a bit more headroom. I'll probably implement this solution in the near future.

What's working for me right now is to use the stock setup, but move the seat forward toward the steering wheel, which gives me enough headroom to wear my helmet with a tolerable amount of contact with the headliner. Believe it or not, there is more headroom with the seat forward than back. It's a bit of a scruntch, but is works well enough to get out on the track and have fun. I also like to sit quite close to the steering wheel at the track, so this method fits my driving style.

Good luck, and let me know if you come up with any magic solutions.

Markus,

I'm 6'2", however, when I installed a Recaro SRD, I picked up an inch or so of additional headroom. I use two stock (a left and right) steel 911SC adjustable mounts. I know others who have cut the seat bracket on the floor down. One taller guy in our region took the brackets out and just mounted the seat to the floor.

I installed Corbeau Targa RS seats, and found that I had to shave about an inch and a half out of the lower padding for sufficient helmet clearance. It was easy enough to do myself, although I can't speak for the stock seats being a simple.
