Post Rear Sway Bar Bracket Broken

I was inspecting my ’77 911S the other day and noticed that the rear, passenger side, sway bar bracket was dangling. It had completely broke from the pan/frame but is still attached to the sway bar. I noticed that the brackets for the sway bar are welded (or were) to the pan. Is this a common instance with these cars? Where can I go to get this repaired? Will Midas do something like this or is this an Auto Body/Collision type repair? What can I expect to pay for this kind of service? Are there alternatives (Weltmeister, etc) and how do these attach? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your input!

From what I have read on the Pelican Parts board this is a common problem. Most guys just get it welded back into place. Do a search on that board.

This isn't uncommon, particularly in 911's with larger sway bars in the rear. You may be able to weld it back on. If not, the solution is to buy the current Porsche replacement part, which is reinforced (there's a picture of it in the Automation catalog). If you do one, might as well do the other.

However, if you can weld the existing one in, you might consider welding in some additional support. Here's a link to a page that shows what a repair and reinforcement looks like: http://instant-g.com/Projects/911Swa...air/index.html

You can also weld on a butterfly shaped piece of metal, similar to what Porsche does on it's reinforced bracet. If you need this, I can scan in a picture with dimensions.

Thanks Bill. I looked in the Automotion catalogue but it appears that those replacement mounts are only good for SC's (1978)and newer. I will try the alternative route in simply beefing up the existing mounts. Would you recommend a body shop or another type of business (Ie. Muffler/suspension shop like Midas)? When they weld, I should remind them to disconnect the battery and the ignition box. Anything else you can think of?

Same thing happened to my 86... caused by being held down on a flat bed tow truck to tightly... had it welded back on by my local Porsche Shop for $150.00+/-.

You have the good one in place, and it should be obvious where the old one tore off. If a shop can add 1+1 they should be able to do it. Check out that web page from my other post, it'll give you an idea of what works for reinforcement.

Hey guys,
I just got back from lunch and found a local muffler shop that welded up some reinforcements on the spot. They charged me $15.00. Can you beleive it? Thanks for all of your advice! Now I still have enough in my Porsche "slush" fund for my next project. Hmmm.....
