Default Fuel sensor calibration

Driving a new to me 911 SC and ran out of gas with tank showing slightly les than half. When full, gauge stays on 4/4 and empties at just below 2/4. Can this be recalibrated?
I have removed the float sensor, the float appears to move easily when I tip the tube. I have not dissembled the tube to clean the inside, is this recommended? Any advice to remedy the situation would be appreciated.

likely just need a new sender , but you have nothing to lose playing with it..

did the light come on ? the light is usually accurate even if the gauge isn't.

remove the nut on the bottom, take off the cylinder and clean the pole and the wires, should work fine once again.

And then replace the nut with a Nylock when you put it back together. When I pulled my sender the nut was gone and the tube was rolling around in the bottom of the tank.
