Default ECU problem drives me nuts #$%*@!

Ok here's whats happening. Following a transmission rebuilt, we put back the engine and box, and upon trying to start the car we found out it was misfiring. We have put new flywheel sensors (both) and engine temperature sensor. I swapped an 89 euro ECU from another (working) car, but the same symptoms occured (same misfiring). I borrowed an 84 US spec ECU from another car and my car (with 87 euro engine) works perfect with it. Sent my 87 ECU to a friend with an older 3,2 (84) and he said it worked in his car. WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE ???? Which ECU years are interchangable ? Could my car be working in a "safe mode" with the older type US spec ECU ?
