Though I am in the middle of a "backdate" - I prefer tribute - I can't disagree with the author's sentiment. I would never build something that appears to be from the 60's or 70's on a 90's canvas and don't know why you'd want to mix modern conveniences like power steering, power brakes, ABS etc, with a car that looks like it predates those technologies. I'm building an ST on a G body and specifically a 915 car because I want the most evolved version of the light/raw cars as the build's foundation. But there will be few interior or exterior bits that date the car as being from the wrong era, like headlamps, center console, dash, mirror, wheels, etc. I don't want a chop job packaged and sold as a "backdate". I want a car that is period correct with perhaps some very minor enhancements - I'm keeping the power windows, my seats have inserts that were never sold in the 70's, and my dials are inspired by the 912. My base car was very nice and part of me wrestled with the idea of using such a nice example given I like G bodies as they are.
Wondering what people here think of the article...
I mean... here's my opinion: its Jalopnik which mean its only written to be controversial and create clicks for advertisements. They have about less than zero credibility as any authority on anything automotive.
If you like it, it's good. That's all that matters. Zero fcks about what other people think
My opinion is that one should do what they please with their stuff. I hot rodded/partially back dated my 88 and it was well received by my local club members. It was a 6 year process but I did
not remove the iconic "G" body cues that most love about impact bumper cars. When I sold it a auction it did tremendously well. I am now working on a 72. It too is hot rodded and made to
be my own without chopping up a narrow body classic. Do what you like I am sure it will be great.
The 964 was just SO ugly with the Pillsbury dough boy pillowed bumpers AND the 69-73 long nosed 911s were just so beautiful, that EVERY 964 should be backdated!
About the only thing I disagree with is that 964s are ugly. My bias is that there is no ugly 911... I even have love for the 996.
To clarify, what other's think does not in any way whatsoever influence what I'm doing. I asked because I find the topic interesting.
Starting a project myself and going through the thought process of figuring out what was important to me and what my available options are, I've come to agree with the author. I love Singer and their (NA) DLS and Turbo studies in particular, but their Classic has fallen a bit out of favor with me. Though well executed, I now see it as a bit of a chop job with little cohesion. I really do much prefer something that looks more original.

I call them Jay Leno cars as they all have the giant jay leno chin .... once you see it , you cant unsee it.
Everyone has there own opinion and Jalopnik like someone above stated wrote the article for advertisers and click bait. I personally love the Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer, and if I won the lottery I would find one and buy it. I also love the 911SC/930/964/993. The 991/992 have become to large and seem like a cartoon caricature. As a kid of the 70's I have and still have the Porsche 930 Turbo poster on the wall. I live happily in my 2008 Mustang Bullitt (my attainable dream car) with a 2017 Satin Blue Beetle Classic as the daily driver ( I call my POORSCHE) to own the real thing that's what my dreams are made of. My Poor Man's Porsche

i fully agree with this , and the sentiment of do what makes you happy ..
Nothing irritates me more than guys wanting 50 opinions on what they should do with their car .. FFS , grow some ***** and make a decision like a man , stop looking for approval from others ... lol
