Lost oil dipstick in deposit.... Help!
Guys,
A friend of mine has lost itīs oil dipstick into the oil deposit, and it seems to have gone down a really long way, as it is not reachable.
Also, and most worrying, the car has started making a metallic "tick" every 2 or 3 rear wheel turns, funny enough, not related to engine RPM, but only audible when car is rolling!
How can we get the dipstick out??? Iīve tried with one of the magnet extenders, as well as a flexible "grabber", but to no avail... any ideas??
TIA

Race Car
I can vouch for Thom's solution...although I have never lost a dipstick before, that would be a perfect way to gain the most access to the interior of the oil tank.
***Have an extra sender gasket handy when you do this, it is cork and will disintigrate (SP?) when you remove the sender.

FWIW, the oil tank gasket is *IDENTICAL* to a VW bug/bus gas tank sender gasket.

Thenks for the replies... is there no risk of the stick "touching" any moving parts? The clicking noise that has recently started (albeit not inmediately after losing the stick into the tank) is worrying my friend.
Thanks again

Nope, no threat. It would have to make a 90-degree turn to get out thru the bottom oil line, then a couple more bends here and there to get into the engine, and then somehow make it past the screen on the oil pump...
Some people have reported finding several dipsticks when they removed their tanks for cleaning.

Check out this link to prevent the accumilation of numerous dipsticks. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...ML/011546.html

Why would stainless steel not be magnetic?
You can of course just use a coathanger with a hook on the end to fish it out. See the Pelican board for ideas on how to not lose it again - people put drain traps in there and everything.

Mark; I think stainless steel is a nonferrous metal which basically means that it lacks any iron in it,the lack of iron makes it very corrosion resistant but also makes it non magnetic.I'm also positive I have seen poor quality stainless "rust" but I think that is just minute refining imperfections.I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.
