HELP!!!
I have a 71 911t that won't start when the engine is hot. And in the last few weeks it has started something new. The engine starts to lose power when it gets too warm (about half way up the temp. gauge).
Symptoms are:
running rough
starts to backfire if I give it gas
when going at Highway speed, tach will drop from 4000 to 0
The starter turns the engine over, so it's not that.
I can hear the fuel pump runing, and if I try to start it for too long it smells like it's flooding
so that leaves something in the iginition system.... but what?
Here's what I have done so far:
- New spark plugs (could the gap be wrong)
- New Ignition wires (i bought wires for a 911, but the wires I got are about 6inches longer than the ones i took off)
- New Points, Cap, Rotor
It has a Permatune Electronic ignition. Do these symptoms indicate that it might be bad?
What about the distributor or coil?
Any Ideas?
Thanks for any help!
Neil

Soundsto me like you are running lean. I suggest taking it to someone who is knowlegable with Webbers and make sure all is right in that area. Don;t want to disagree with JoeB, but it has always been my understanding that Permatunes either work or don't and seldome fail prgressivly or intermittently, but hey, if you keep the car loing enough, it will always find new ways to baffle you. It's part of the fun! No, really! Why don't these things happen in February? Good luck.
