Default My 'NEW' 911 1st Post!!

It seems like a lot of newbies are signing on with new cars! Well I have been away from 911s for a long time and I am due for her. She is a 70' T with Rally race history and very original. I am going to pull the engine for safe keeping and build a short stroke 2.69ltr 10.5:1 comp carbed race engine and go RS look without modifying her original goodies at all. Brakes will go 4 piston in front and the suspension will get a full upgrade as well. I will run her in time trials and historic racing and on the weekends. I hope to join in the discussions as much as possible.

OMG that's a gorgeous car!!! There's nothing sweeter than a clean long-hood 911.... I wouldn't change a thing on it.

It looks beautiful -- I wouldn't change anything.

How will you "go RS look without modifying her original goodies at all"?

Too many RS-look cars already... not enough 911R-look cars though!

Thumbs up Welcome

Ahhhhh, the exuberance of youth. Beautiful car. I hope the upgrades work out for you. All it takes is a small "addiction" and BIG rectangular dollars. Welcome to Rennlist.

Thanks all! I have considered an 'R' vs 'RS' but I just love the Duck Tail. I don't know yet to tell you guys the truth. I will not touch the 1/4 panels or anything non-reversable. If I go with a duck tail I will get the complete lid and keep the original safe in the garage. The same with the RS valance in front. The interior is perfect minus some RS door panels and a radio delete! The tunes will be from the back! The engine and tranny will also go in the garage and the 2.69 ltr and 5 spd will go in. That brings up a good point, the engine I want to build needs to start from a 2.2 ltr engine. How important is it to keep the numbers matching engine stock vs using it to build the short stroke big bore 2.69 ltr? The big motor will look stock outside to all but the very very trained eye.

Welcome to the early 911 addiction. Very nice looking car. I will second the opinion to go with the 'R' look, but sounds like your mind is made up. Tell us about the rally history of the car. If it is significant I wouldn't think you would want to change the displacement of the original motor.

What color is that? Look on the driver's side door jam and tell us the paint code numbers on the little metal tag there. Are those glass bumpers or metal without the deco trim? Those seats are cool, were they added recently or have they been in the car for awhile? One thing you might condsider is getting a Certificate of Authenticity from the Porsche Club of America. It is expensive, but it would tell you how it was originally delivered.

Hey...I bid on that one! Congrats on the purchase! I wouldn't change a thing either, other than lowering it a bit. FWIW, I don't care much for ducktails on a narrow body car. If you're going with a ducktail, you'll want the fenders to complete the look. But I wouldn't bother...this car is sweet as is. Lower it, maybe go with 15x7 Fuchs, and go with H4 headlights...that's one sweet car!

Doug,

Good idea to lower it.

Joe,

If you do decide to change to 15X7" wheels, be sure to check the part # on the back of your existing wheels. They look like they are the early 15X6" wheels called 'deep sixes'. They are more rare and desireble than the later 6" Fuchs. The part # for deep six wheels is 901.361.012.06

Those wheels would be the correct wheels for your car. They were first used in 1968, when they were put on the front of the 911 R cars. Porsche switched to the later style (911.361.020.00) during 1971.

Thanks guys! It's really funny. I picked the car up over the weekend with my wife in Vegas and stayed over to see if we could win back some of what we spent (yeh right!) and had a great time. We had three little things pop up. The first was the ignition switch spring back from the start position is shot so you have to manually twist the key back after you crank her up (no big deal). More on that later. After one hour of talking and such we close our deal and shake hands and off we go. Despite an advertised flat spot off the line, she pulls well for a little 2.2 T and sounds just right in a crowded parking garage full of Ferraris and such (Vegas, you know!). About a block out of McCarren Airport onroute to the Strip we have second 'thing', we get about as close as you can to becoming a running board for a lifted SUV ;{ the behemoth didn't turn infront of us, he swerved with force and I found that our little 911 needs the front brakes looked at since she promply locked up the rear and not much of anything in the front, but marginal 911 brakes from 1970 are still much better than most and with a little pedal modulation we were able to read the brand, model and size of the rear tires as they went by and not the front tires as they rolled over us!! With a quick change of our underwear complete, we decide to valet park the car since we figured it would be a bit safer than the big self parking garages in Vegas. I give the valet a few pointers on how to drive her, shift her, a couple of pumps to start her and watch out for the key issue! Well a few hours later we ask for the car back to change hotels (long story). After a few minuets I hear that flat six pulling nicely thru the parking garage but it sounds a little funny. As the car approaches (quite sexy face on her by the way) I hear the distinctive sound of the engine running with starter still engaged!! That punk kid forgot and couldn't hear the scream of the starter for the LONG drive from where they put her!! The poor starter was smoking badly and sounding like hell. I shut her off and let the thing cool for 20 min while lecturing the valet a bit. I start her up unevenfully and figure no harm no foul. We find a new hotel, self park, spend the night, lose a little money on the tables, and go get the car the next morning to head home. We decide to gas up outside of Vegas and hit the road with a fair amount of traffic keeping me from exploring her abilities much. About 50 miles out of town we stop for gas and a drink (98 deg outside!!) and the stater is no longer starting ;( the bang on the starter trick is not only hard to do on a 911 but very hot and in this case ineffective! My wife has to do everything in her power to keep me from going back to Vegas for a little valet bashing! Thankfully the car is very light and I have no problem pushing our new baby to life and my wife is a good sport too. As I get back on the freeway, the traffic has died down a bit and I start to play with her and making sure all is well. I hit 4th and now really want to get a five speed. I don't know what made me try it but I thought lets just see what happens if I go to where 5th is, you guessed it, 5th. How a 5spd can be mistaken for a 4 spd I don't know! That really made up for the starter issue and we had a great drive home. She pulls a little too good for a 2.2T so I will do some exploratory surgury in the coming days to see what is UP. After having her a few days I have changed my plans a bit. The duck tail is out, she has too pretty an *** as is! I do want to put an RS valance on her to keep her nose down at speed and so I can fit a front mount cooler on her. She is an E-Bay purchase that seems to be all OK. She burned no oil, does leek a bit but not too badly. She pops a bit on decell so I will check the exhaust studs and exhaust pipes to make sure she isn't pulling in cold air. She runs fat (rich) which is the cause of the flat spot I am sure which is much much worse after filling the tank. The fuel system is not stock and needs to be changed since I think she is getting too much fuel pressure and spilling over the fuel bowls. I will have to see though. Fun fun!!

Thanks for the story...it's so much fun to hear about owners and their first drives in their Pcars! (even if they're not all rosy! ) Congrats!

You'll probably hear a lot from people commenting on needing a rear spoiler if you get a front spoiler, etc. There is validity to that. I would first suggest you get the car lowered and properly balanced and see if this helps keep the nose planted. Of course, if you want a front oil cooler, you'll need the RS spoiler. But again, you may not need the front mounted oil cooler either.

OK, now I'm just spouting my opinions...I was interested in that car because of it's clean "R" look, as soon as you add spoilers, etc. than it starts to look like something else. I love it the way it is! (...just lower it. )

But hey, it's your car so do what you want! Most importantly, enjoy that baby!
