Post Signs that it has been tracked?

I am looking for a '99 or '00 996. I am very familar with the car so I know all the general build issues, what to watch out for, etc. However, are there any tell tale signs that a car has been 'tracked' a significant amount (yes, i know it was designed for that) or driven to extremes?

Thanks.

For track usage, one thing to look for is a higher than expected level of rock chips on the front and rear of wheel well fender lips.

If it was tracked it is probably in better condition than one that has not been tracked. I may think differently than others, but, if I was going to push a car to its limits I would make every effort to be sure it was up to the task.

A few stone chips? All PORSCHES have them. Not an issue for me.

Harness bar marks on B/C pillars, mounts for 6-point harnesses, piles of toasted carbon/kevlar brake pads, 7 used liters of ATE Blue in the corner of the garage...

Hey, wait a minute... That's me!

Honestly, a car can be mishandled/mistreated on the street or the track. Pre-purchase inspection by a top shop and solid service history is the key.

Okay, I'll get back over to the other boards now.

Mark,

"PO" = Previous Owner

"PCA" = Porsche Club of America

That's insider track Porsche speak I guess.

Man-o-man. You sure you want a Porsche? By the looks of Rennlist, all of us owners are track junkies! You sure would not want to get stuck with a track guys car would ya?

Of course a track guy probably has the best maintained & cared for machine of the bunch... And as you know these cars were made for that...

Heck watch out... I hear that if you park a tracked Porsche too close to the Benzo the 'ol girl may catch something!

Consider an SLK or a CLK... Not much of a chance that they were tracked if thats all that matters.

I think a car that is tracked in a non-competitive event maybe once or twice a year stands a good chance of having a previous owner who is likely very good about maintenance and care issues. But that's where it ends.

If someone is racing in a series, or tracking as much as I do my car (about once a month), then it's definitely got some harder wear and tear on it than just about any street-driven car. Running a 911 near redline for the prolonged stretches that track driving demands, in addition to the additional stress on suspension components, wheels and the tub itself when you're testing the adhesion limits of big, fat, R-compound tires -- all of this ages a car much faster than driving it to work a few times a month would.

I love tracking my car, but I also know that 10,000 track miles is a heck of a lot harder on it than 10,000 highway miles. I'll grant that there are also downsides to short trips in a 911... but there isn't anything as stressful for a 911 on my local highways and byways as, say, a good run through turn 8 at Willow Springs.

That's alot of tape if you do the front too

Amen Jack,

You are of course correct.

I had "limited track use" in my mind while I typed.

I severely doubted this M-Benz poster would be looking at a real hot rodded Porsche.

Maybe a tiptronic 3.4 liter with full burlwood & extra cup holder.

How about worn LSD plates (non-996, though) and wheel bearings.

I've seen similar situations where there are rolls and rolls of tape used. Almost looks like the camouflage auto makers use on new model testing.

I don't really understand the taping stuff. I don't really get stone chips at the track. I get all the stone chips driving behind the endless parade of bloody gravel trucks and SUV's here in the Chicago area.

Chunks of rubber, now that's a different issue. Not too bad at big tracks like Road America. Short grippy tracks with a wide variety of lines like Gingerman absolutely cover the car in black rubber marks.

It's a good thing that washing the car is therapeutic...
