Signs that it has been tracked?
#16
I've only got 4 days of track time so far but I've noticed the my car runs better on the way home. I think that the "near redline" work cleans it out.
I think if the tires show scuff marks right up to
indicators you could assume some track time ( or at least some real hot street driving).

Hey Sky Mast-
Hey, I didn't mean to be rude w/ my initial response -hope you didn't take it the wrong way...looking back on this board, tho, at the other responses, it seems everyone pretty much feels the same - I bet if you just asked, most sellers who've tracked their car probably not be ashamed to tell you about it, and how they've taken care of it - for better or worse, they are probably more knowledgable about their car than most.
If you get one , I hope you do get drive it on the track
Fred L.
BTW< the poster who wrote that it runs better on the way home is right...

But keep in mind that tracking a 996 voids the warranty. So if the dealer knows it's been tracked, or if they know that you do, then you're out of luck. I'd make sure you know the whole story.

I think it only voids the warranty if you used slicks, DOT or race. Either way it is a load of **** and if i bought a 996 (not that i have the money to do it anyway), and they tried to tell me the warranty was voided for taking it to the track, i would be writing letters to every employee at Porsche with a wooden desk, as well as every car magazine in the us and europe.
The only reason they came up with the "track=no warranty" thing, in my opinion, is b/c they know that the car is ****. You go to any porsche parts dept and ask them about the differences between the 996,986 and the older porsches, and if you know them well enough they will tell you, lots and lots of parts. They are selling more parts than they ever did. If you walked into a pre-996 986 parts dept you wouldn't see engines in crates.
Porsche is the most profitable car company in the world b/c the are selling inferior porsches for much more money than they're worth. And they are making money fixing them.
Sorry for hijacking the thread, i just needed to vent.
I wouldn't worry about an older porsche being tracked, my father had a 1972 911e that remains stock to this day in perfect mechanical condition. He raced or autocrossed that thing every other weekend since 1974(when he bought it) and to this day it still runns like a top.

Umm, hate to say it, but Porsche says that the 996 engine was NOT, repeat, was NOT designed to be driven on the track. [My, how the company has changed philosophies.] I believe the oil system is not designed to handle the g-loads and/or sustained high RPMs. Porsche offers an upgrade to fix this, but it violates the warranty (!).
No, I'm not making this up, it is verfiable from Porsche. The 996 TT and GT3 and race cars use a different engine. I wish it weren't true!
