Considering 87 targa cassis red - thoughts?
I found a 1987 targa in cassis red with burgundy interior with 93k miles, and would like any opinions based on some pics that I have. I am in Ohio, and it is in California, so I can’t see/touch/smell it. The boutique seller doesn’t have any documentation or maintenance records. The PPI looked good for compression and leak down. They said the paint is all original and never any respray or damage. I’ll take any comments on the pics shown. I already have an early build 996, and am considering either an 84-89 911 or a 2009-2012 cayman for a 6th car. So it will get driven once or twice a week. Thanks in advance.

Burning Brakes
I have an '85, and the only thing that looks out of place in the pics is the exhaust system. Heat exchangers are not original, and the catalytic converter is gone. Surely an upgrade. May be an issue if smog checking in CA or similar state.
K+N air filter too, is of course not original.
Condition, etc. of everything else looks normal, original, and good.
Things I'd check for that may not have been checked:
do all HVAC blowers work - 2 footwell, and one in the engine bay
Lift the battery out and inspect carefully for rust that may have been triggered by a leaking battery

Cool, thank you. I noticed the heat exchangers were not original, but didn’t know if it was some sort of aftermarket upgrade. I asked the guy to take pic/video of battery area. I guess I wasn’t specific enough to check under. I see prices all over the place for the G50s, so I don’t even know what is a fair price.

It looks pretty honest/original from those pics but I gotta ask - you are debating between a 3.2 Carrera and a late-ish model Cayman? That is a seriously diverse spectrum of cars. Are you sure you really want either of them, cause they clearly aren't going to fill the same hole in your stable.

Agree, lift that gigantic battery out of there and have a good look, I think you may need to have that area addressed. The battery platform is elevated about 3/4" and if the battery leaked, and was left unattended, you're in for some big bills.

They say the paint is original but I don’t have any paint meter readings. I was put off due to lack of receipts/maintenance records. Here is the link: https://www.galleryjunction.com/deta...e-911/87867285
I love the look/lines of the 987.2 (reliable, decent mpg, value), but have always wanted an 80s air cooled 911. I had the posters on my wall as a teen (and Farrah Fawcett) and always roll down my window when I am near one just to hear the engine. I’m an odd duck - I am ok with either one. Sort of like one of my children/dogs/cars, we love whatever joins the family. We are a mixed family: Alfa Romeo GTV6, 1977 Toyota FJ40, 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser, 1999 911, and a 2004 Lexus LX470. Thanks for the responses.
