Mike-
I believe L999 is Special Order - Paint to Match.

...check out this cool site, that will decode your option codes online!!

http://www.kindel.com/porsche/options.asp

...looks like L999 is a custom metallic paint. I have the same code on a 1985 Carrera that is painted Slate Blue Metallic.

...I know that because the specific paint code and German description of the color are indicated on a sticker inside the front truck compartment, on the passenger side.

Porsche used to have a really cool paint to match program. You could literally send them a napkin with a ketchup stain and they would try to match it. (They may still have similar program...don't know). I saw a targa recently that was painted Mercedes Benz "Smoke Silver," which was a color available about the same time as that targa (1988). It was a costly option.

Mine apparently was also factory special order "Crystal Blau - 32092"

I have found a couple of other sites with paint codes as well:

http://www.porschedecals.com/paint911.htm

http://www.paintscratch.com/

http://www.912registry.org/restore/pcode.htm

HTH,
P.

p.s. mine is darker than it looks in the picture
