Default CA smog rules

I have not installed SSI's heat exchangers on my '80 SC because of the CA required smog check every two years. It's my understanding that my car will not pass with the SSI's installed. It's also my understanding that cars older than 25 years are smog exempt. Given that my car will be 25 years old in 2005 and last passed the smog check in 9/04, can I install them now with the understanding that no future smog will ever be required? Is it actually possible to have my cake and eat it too?

Source http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm:

How old does a vehicle have to be to qualify for a smog exemption?

Vehicles with a year model 30 years old or older are exempt from the smog certification requirements.

Example: The calendar year is 2004- 29 = 1975 exempt year model

The current calendar year minus 29 equals the year model exempt from smog certification.
I have a '79 and am patiently waiting for the last smog check ...

BTW, they are trying to push through a bill to freeze that at 1975. If they're sucessful, your car will never be smog exempt in California.

I'm not sure that the SSI's would actually cause your car to pollute more. I believe that the cars are usually failed under the "visual inspection" rules. You might want to take a chance that the technician won't have a clue as to what a stock SC exhaust looks like. Especially if the exhaust is dirty and look old...

Maybe try one of those no pass/no pay places...

Or just replace the exhaust for the test.

the legislation that pig4bill speaks of is assembly bill ab2683. it has just made it out of committee and will be voted on by the entire legislation soon. if it passes it goes to the state senate after that, then to the gov.

i have been watching this bill closely and have written letter to my rep. my rep authored the bill so my plea is falling on deaf ears. i would hope that you guys write your reps before it get out of the state legislator. i will post a link shortly so you can comment to you rep. do this if you want the rolling 30 year to be maintained. i am waiting on my 78 and it appears that a 77 will be the cut off due to DMV requirements for registration notification issues.

For what it's worth, the Atlanta area is getting almost as bad as the left coast as far as emissions check goes. I have had a cat bypass for 5 years on my 85 911TL. Each year in order to pass the test I add 4 gallons of denatured alcohol to a 1/4 tank of gas, drive the car for about 25 miles and take it right the the emissions station............it passes every time. Last week the attendant said that he was impressed by the low emmitence levels which he said was lower than a new car. As far as the visual inspection, these guys think the heat exchanger is the cat.
Hope this info is of some help to the Porsche groupies.

An alternative you could consider is to get historical vehicle plates, which have the benefit of no smog inspection and reduced annual fees. The other side of the coin is mileage restrictions -- which aren't enforced, but could possibly cause a tangle with your insurance carrier.

Not quite true:

Historical plate is issued cars 25 years or older.
cars that are 25-30 years still MUST pass smog before they can be registered as Historical vehicles.

you will pay less in fees. And, you get to drive it less as well.

25 years or older, historical significance (not defined to whom), and driven only to and from car meets.
