Default Desperately seeking Axle…

Guys -

I’m out of ideas here, there are none anywhere I look… 1990 Carrera 4 S (964-349-038-CX) front left cv axle. Any angels out there with one, or even parts of one?

Thanks -
Gal Bar-or

Gal,

Are you not in the US or something? I just Googled that part number and found a bunch, including Sunset Porsche, Gaudin Porsche, Porsche Columbus (Ohio). Or are they all out of stock?

These show up everywhere but not a single one is available. Most shops won’t even take a back order, because Porsche has none and none coming in.

Yes, as interested as I am to hear about this new technology of CV axles in the front(!), you'll probably get better answers in the 964 forum. Good luck.

He's talking about a Carerra 4 ... all wheel drive !
Wow , it seems like the repair kit for the rear axle is only $85.00 but i can't
seem to find a repair kit for the front axles.
You can try ECS Tuning , they seem to have stock available !

Cheers
Phil

Starting with the '85 911 when the CVs went from 100 to 108mm, the stub axles were welded to the outboard CV joint so only the inner CV joint is replaceable to 'rebuild' the axle. In practice, this means that the entire axle needs to be replaced when worn. This is also the case with the 964 front and rear axles.

Brand new, as of 1989 1/2.

To add a little more info on the 1985 change (since that's what I have), from my notes on this:

My early 1985 transaxle is 915.68 (they changed to 915.73 mid-year). So my CV joint boots take a 6mm Allen wrench, later ones take something else (easy way to check).

Regarding repair with the welded stub axle, usually the first repair needed would be to replace the boot(s), and as long as you can get one joint off, you can replace both boots. Right? I always prefer to keep the joints and axles if possible, on all my cars, just replacing boots and grease. Even when a pair of OE boot kits costs more than a complete brand new axle from China.

Another CV axle detail for the older 911s at least is that the axles are identical left-vs-right when manufactured, but are stamped with German letters to indicate left / right. And then once they are used, it is not recommended to swap them left - right. I don't know if that has to do with the axles themselves changing under stress or the CV-joint bearing contact points wearing in. Curious to know in case anyone knows.
