915 shifter upgrade question from a newbie
Which 915 shifter upgrades are best?
I have a problem down shifting from 5th to 4th that may be worse than with many 915 transmissions. The upshifting, the synchros, clutch and shift rod coupler and motor mounts are all pretty good, but it’s still almost impossible to tell if I ‘m down shifting from 5th to 2nd, 4th or reverse.
I would like to completely eliminate the chance of down shifting ftom 5th to 2nd during driver’s training and scattering a nice running dual plug, 2.7 RS clone engine all over the track.
I’ve looked at the two shifter upgrades and am wondering how well they work. One upgrade is a $300 modification the the stock shifter that is visable on it’s right side. The other is a $600 shifter replacement.
I’m wondering what experience people have had with these two upgrades?

Hi Roger:
Dan offered some really good advice; the shift coupler, shift shaft bushing and bottom cup must be perfect for proper gear selection.
Further, the shift coupler's adjustments (side-to-side and depth) must be spot on.
After that, I'll tell you that the WEVO shifter is VERY good and although not cheap, I'm putting one in my own '74 for all the same reasons (and my shift parts are excellent).
It transmits a tad more gear noise than the stock one, but its not objectionable.

If money is no object ($1,500 plus), you go on the track a lot and you want the best, full Wevco (transmission parts- pull) maybe the way to go.
However, if alll you want is a clue to what gear you are in, and have a definte improvement in shifting then you can not beat the Seine system setup. $150 for the kit, another $50 for a coupler and a few dollars for the shift bushing and you are all set.
I have the Seine, best bang for the buck improvement I can think of.

I'd like to add that anyone looking to improve the shifting on a 901 trans can also use the Seine gateshifter. You'll have to change to the 915 shift tower assy. You can find these for about $100 at the swap meet. Add the Seine assy. and the improvement is spectacular. You'll never get the wrong gear again.

How about the Porsche factory SSK? There was an ariticle in the m most-recent Pano or Excellence (can't remember which) that said it was a night and day improvement over stock. It improved the quality and throw of the shifts (enables tall drivers to shift to 2nd without moving their leg), but didn't reduce the side-to-side spacing. I don't think the kit is expensive, either...under $200?
