Angry Another hidden costs to owning a Porsche

Hi All,

We'll I've discovered another hidden cost to driving my new baby, a '71 911T Targa (my first Porsche)...the cost of all these speeding tickets! Two in the last three days! Luckily I have a euro spec with KPH only speedo...that excuse got me down to a ticket for 5 over from 58 in a 35mph zone (passing granny...I of course had every intention of slowing down ), then 5 over with no points going 82 in a 70 on the highway (no breaks for those fancy foriegn cars...when Im around the jerk in the F150 right on my ***, hes friggin invisible!).

I dont know...I better start driving the ol' beater work car again...nahh its a price worth paying, because when I'm winding her out like that, what a thrill!

Cheers!

Jamie

Jamie,
I know exactly what you are talking about. In my case, my sppedo is 10MPH off. I have used that 3 times so far with no tickets. The second time the cop actually rode with me and had his partner zap us with radar. I think he just wanted an excuse to ride in a Porsche.
Pedal to the metal and rubber side down.

I'm currently battling a reckless ticket which was given because I was "accelerating irresponsibly" (according to the cop). Not sure what that's supposed to mean but just a warning to those in the DC area, the fines on the GW Parkway are very stiff and will land you in Federal Court.

After talking to my lawyer I found out that in Fairfax County, Virginia that anything over 80 is reckless. Anything over 90 gets you two days behind bars plus a day for every mile over 90 (e.g. 95 gets you seven days).

I don't know how we let our legislators pass laws like this.

One of the techniques I use to assure that I am keeping to (relatively) low speeds is by staying in low gears according to the type of road. neighborhoods : 2nd, feeder & surface connector streets : 3rd, in-city limited access, pkways & wide open blvds : 4th, interstates : 5th. calibrate the revs in each gear against the speed limit and develop a "natural" pace.

My speedometer is +7mph faster (vs my GPS) at 65mph, makes me feel faster without breaking any rules.

I also get "heat" when I am driving around town in 2nd gear, even at legal speeds. Nice thing about these cars is that at 4000rpm, that thrust fw'd is only a throttle blip away! , later for the heck'lers...

That's crazy man, two days for doin over 80. ****, on the 285 beltway around Atlanta, 85-90mph is just normal. Every once in a while, epecially around quota time the cops will start pullin people but to pass a cop above 80 is normally not a problem. I hear Indianapolis is even more fun than Atlanta. I raced a Boxster on 20 going through the middle of the city in my 951 yesterday and we were above 140mph. Luckily no piggies saw us cause they will come down on you for that kinda speed here. Oh yeah, I smoked the Boxster. That was definitely one Boxster owner that has a little more respect for a water pumper.

If in Doubt, turn up the boost!

Here in Arizona, this reckless driving issue is getting out of hand. I got a ticket here last year for speeding along with a reckless driving ticket. The reckless driving ticket in Arizona is 8 points. What upsets me is that a DUI is also 8 points here. Now just compare the two. Reckless driving can be classified as an opinion judgement by the officer. Though some speeds can automatically be classified as reckless, there is just no comparison between the two. A DUI is something which no opinion can overide. If you are over the alcahol limit stipulated by the state, you are legally drunk and that is that. But to award the same points for reckless driving as in a DUI is reckless behavior in the part of the legislators.

I thought reckless driving was pretty much max points in every state. I know it has been in Arizona ever since I can remember.

If you plead guilty to the speeding, you can get the reckless thrown out. You cannot be charged with two offenses for the same act. At least that's how the lawyer of a friend of mine played it when he got busted. BTW, he did not pass Go, and went directly to Jail. I had to drive the car into town and raid the ATM's to bail him out.

BTW, don't speed in the northern part of the state, you might get shot. The cops up there think they're real cowboys.

While I have not received a ticket yet. My daily
NJ commute on 287 in BW to Edison NJ is 75-85 typ, and I pull over for the movers. I'm afraid a red
porsche is a ticket waiting to happen, so I always tail someone and watch out for brake lites
way ahead. In NJ the legal system is laywer friendly, so buy a lawyer and you will reduce the
points assciated. I keep a "chiefs card" with me at all times (get it with a small contribution to the local police), PBA works also.

HI guys

Well, I hate to make you all maddeningly jealous, but...

I am fortunate enough to be living in the land of Porsche - Germany. But not because it is the land of porsche, but because these people have got somegthing dead right - there are NO speed limits on the highways

I take it real easy for the 10 km from home to the Mway ever morning, but once in the mouth of the highway, I go in in third with full throttle - its a stinker

This one of the deciding factors for getting a performance car while on a two year contract here in Germany - its got to be the place to own a Porsche by far...

anyhow, I overtook a cop car the other morning at 180 km/h - beatiful, and regualarly I'll be doing 220 km/h on my way back from work when the traffic is lighter - I really cant believe my luck...

take care and talk to you all again.

Reckless is pretty serious stuff in VA, but it can be easily defeated or reduced. As arrogant as the NoVA courts are, they realize the law is a little too stiff here and you can get it pleaded down to 74 in a 55 zone, if you're polite to the cop, get a word with the prosecutor and weren't doing some ridiculous speed. It's a good old boy system, where the prosecutors usually won't talk to you unless you've paid your protection money and gotten a lawyer from their racket. A real egregious speed vioilation will land you in hot water and you won't get out of it. But everyone knows that no one goes the speed limit around here. I drive well above the reckless speed threshold regularly. But I usually let some Mustang or ricer get ahead and be my radar shield.

It's a shame they're so tough on speed, when slow-driving, left lane squatting and cell phones are far more dangerous.
