Hoping for an easy answer here, but on my SC all of a sudden, my driver-side mirror seemed loose. So I checked it out, it was just sitting onto its post! Like nothing was keeping it there except its own weight!! OK, so what's the fix, gents ...help! And thanks!
You are missing a screw that takes a 4 mm Allen wrench. See photo of driver's mirror on a 1981 911SC. The dark circle at the base of the mirror is the screw location. See also the assembly diagram: part number #14. How do I know? Someone stole my mirrors many years ago.

Check out my pic. So without scrutinizing the area too closely when I first posted this thread, I bought what seemed to be the appropriate screw and female piece it goes into. I just walked out to the car and immediately realized the base is on there just fine! Look where my mirror is separated. I look up and "into" that round receptacle in the mirror body, inspect the base part, and nothing "seems" broken, but for the life of me I can't figure out how these two pieces stay together!
Is it the threaded portion that is protruding from the base broken off the mirror itself? Am I jacked here? Suggestions, please, as the mirror body is simply sitting on this "post" under its own weight and no way of staying secure. Thanks, all!
I don't think you're missing any parts, and nothing appears to be broken. The threaded piece sticking up out of the mirror mount is 16 from the parts diagram and should be threadedinto the mirror.
Hmmm interesting! Are you saying it is threaded up into the mirror body? Not enough exposed thread on the base end as the mirror just sits on top, and any piece of that hollow bolt, if broken off, would still be around the wiring right? Could the bolt have dropped? Any insights guys?? Big thanks!!!
i imagine it goes through the mirror body, then through a spring , then some sort of nut to maintain tension on the spring, so either nut has come loose or some of the threaded part has sheered off.. i think you may have to take mirror glass off and disassemble from that side to find pieces.
You will need to remove the base from the door to access the hollow bolt. The challenge you will have is that the ID of the hollow bolt is an Allen for tightening it into the mirror housing. This is a problem due to the wires being threaded through the bolt. You will likely have to de-pin the wires from the connector, so you can pull them out of the bolt to allow for the Ellen wrench to insert into the bolt for tightening.

But the thing that gets me, however, is does that hollow bolt in fact thread into the mirror body? If so, then why so little bolt threads exposed such that the mirror sits on the base flush but doesn't engage the threads? Is it the spring on the underside of the base that's pulling the bolt down so there is so little thread exposed (thus throwing me off?).
BTW, tell me I'm unplugging wires from the base side and not from within the mirror body, please!
I fixed this same issue earlier this week as my driver mirror was so loose it was about to fall off. After some research, there was the easy way and the right way from what I saw. Right way is to take everything off, disconnect the glass, get access to the bolt by taking everything apart and properly tightening it. Easy way is to just loosen the bolt that attaches the base to the door (don't remove all the way or the metal piece will fall out and drop to the bottom of the door itself (trust me)) and then just use needle nose or a flathead if you can to tighten the piece (#16 in the diagram) to tighten it. Not a permanent fix, but easy enough that it should last for awhile and when it gets loose again, I will just re-tighten. There are a few videos on youtube that show both approaches. Good luck.

yes i think that makes Sense.. if the spring is under mounted it it pulling the bolt down ( it is trying to maintain tension on the mirror. )
