62k, second owner, sunroof metalic pewter w/blue interoir, all tech updates. KBB says 12k. ALSO - salvage title - Doctor (original owner) had insured it for collector, truck backed up on top of hood and left front fender. Insurance paid the full value and took the title. The guy I am buying it from repaired with factory undercoated hood and fender. The car is pristine, pristine. What are you thoughts?
Salvage titles on average only demand about 30% - 50% of average value of an excellent example. I look at ALL my vehicle purchases as INVESTMENTS...and ANY car with a a scarlet letter(negative Title) on it will carry it through its life diminishing its street value. Flood damage, salvage title, rebuilt title etc will ALWAYS scare away potential buyers. One can say that they are going to keep the car for the rest of your life...but you just never know. How long has this guy had it for sale? Why is he selling it? Get the car inspected no matter what. In the end if you're comfortable with it...its ultimatley your call.
I ran into a 911 like this in my town, had a salvage title due to recovered theft. Its a 1989, 70,000 miles with aftermarket wheels, and he was asking a little less than low book ...2 years later...he is still trying to get rid of it.
Also, get the name of the original Doctor owner and try and confirm the story...because thats almost as old as the "This Old lady sold me this car, it was in a barn."
Thanks Guys,
The Doctor did say that was what happened. He was paid the full value because of the insurance he had - The next owner has pics of before, they are not too bad, and he replaced the hood and fender with used parts to get "the factory undercoating". The car was also in gear when the accident happened, so they put some work in the tranny and put "carrera forks??". All in all, it is really nice - but, it has that crazy title. Anyway, 16k is the price. thanks for your support and opinions.
kbb says 12k, and he want 16k? if it's perfect, and passes a ppi, it's worth around 9k. and that's only for the person that's willing to keep it. he won't get 16k...he'll be lucky to get 10k with a salvage title.
$16k is definitely way too much for a salvage titled SC! The salvage title turns off 90% of buyers immediately. I looked at an '81 with similar history a couple of weeks back- only slightly higher mileage, but mechanically excellent. He was hoping to get $9k which still seems a little hopeful.
Gosh, I've really been looking for a great example of this car, but even some higher mileage or even unknown mileage are asking way higher. Bruce Anderson puts an excellent 83 at 20K but less than excellent between 13.5 and 15.4. I would gladly pay that, but SHOW ME THE CARS!! I believe the story on the car I posted about, and it is 99% perfect...but that goshdarn title...Seems like something could be done about it, The Doc bought the insurance for a collector car, and I don't know how that works, but when it received its ding (literally looked like someone really sat down hard on the hood and fender) he demanded, and received, full value from the insurance co. To them it was a total loss, hence the salvage title. This guy bought it from the insurance, fixed it at 45K miles, and has driven it for the past four years. If the price were lower, I would'nt care, but I don't think he wants to budge. How bad do I want it!.... Thanks guys. Also, NADA puts the value higher than KBB, but what do those guys know?? Sigh..
Tell 'em the joke's on him, should've let the insurance pay for the repair instead of buy the car. That adjuster just beat his a$$. My guess is that he's a PITA and the adjuster didn't like him.
Lowball him and leave him your number, that's about all that's left.
