Have not tried the Polks in this car. Have had them in other cars. The only donwside to them is that they can't handle much bass without "farting" out. I've had better luck with Boston Accoustics. If you are running a sub this may not be an issue, but in my targa I've only got the two and I need as much base as possible. I'm currently running some older Pioneers while I save up for some MB Quarts.
I believe the opening in the door is about 6/14 inches. Which makes most 5 1/4 too small (need rings to fit), and most 6 1/2 too big.
The Boston Accoustic NX67's will fit and they are 6.5's. However the grills are grey which don't match very well if you've got black or tan interior.

6 1/2" speakers fit fine. I had a pair of Pioneer 6 1/2" speakers in my 77 Targa and they fit just fine. Recently I replaced them with the newer Pioneer 2-way 6 3/4" speakers... and they too, fit just fine, and provide very accurate sound, and far more bass than the average door speaker.

I removed some 5¼ Polks from my 87 cab. Replace them with MB Quart PCE 216. Much better sound. Did not have to cut the doors. Used the speakers as coaxial rather than component. Still sound very good.

I have 6 1/2 blaupunkt in mine right now - they sound ok - but the dual out sounds better. Actually I told myself that I would not do a high end stereo in this car - as I have had two stereos ripped out of convertibles I have had in the past (one was unlocked and they ripped the top. The other one was locked and they ripped the top. $300 stereo, $1000 to fix the top!) - so for this one I went inexpensive - I still every one in awhile get the hankering for better tunes.

6.5 are the size you should put in there. you will get better low end responce out that size and it drops right in. 5.25 are not made for bass so there for you will not get much low end out of them. you must also match up the speaker with the power you are putting to them. You also have to judge speakers in there price category. You cant put a 59.00 pr of polks up against 200.00 mb quarts, you must judge 59.00 sp with 59.00 speakers. there are also alot of good product out there. Look at my web site. www.soundfxny.com

To be honest with all of you I could care less about the sound, I like the engine over anything, I just want to replace the old cracked, faded and dented speakers that are in there now...............sorry to mislead anybody, I was merely looking for fitment or non fitment issues.
Thanks

Just replaced the speakers in my SC two weeks ago. I put 6.5" Pioneer two way speakers in - very easy. Had to drill two holes for mounting screws, which was easy. The tough part was the electric window switch. The passenger window switch on the driver's door was a bitch to deal with. Not enough slack in the wiring. The spade connectors all came off when I moved the door panel. Same thing on the passenger door. I got pretty lucky figuring out which wire went where. I can now open and close both the driver's window and the passenger window from the driver's side. The passenger window will open using the passenger switch, but won't close! I gotta go back in and switch some wires around.

Yes, I put 5.25 Polks in my 1984 Carrera doors with relative ease, a few years ago. As I recall, the plastic factory weather shields needed some cut away mods and the freakin' snap in/pressure fit POLK screen grills still fall off from time to time into the door wells. The sound is good, though I too prefer the engine sounds.
