Dash Pad removal
Just picked up a used dash pad in like new condition, to replace my cracked and warped original. I heard that on the 87 thru 89's windshield removal is not needed to install. Any insight?
Thanks

No need for or advantage in removing the windshield on 911's from '86 on in order to R&R the dashboard. With a few variations in the end caps, the dash is basically the same from '86 until the end of 993 production.
The dash is held by seven threaded studs. Two are vertical in the area over your gauges, and the other 5 enter horizontally into the front of the dash. All are held with 10mm nuts and washers.
After removal of the defroster vent, remove the center A/C vent that is held into the dash with two spring loaded clips that can be opened gently with a screwdriver.
Remove the gauges out of the dash. You can gently push one forward from the backside in the trunk, and then reach through and push the others out from inside the car.
The two outer horizontal studs are reached from the front trunk. As with all the studs, a mini ratchet works best given the limited access. The remaining studs are accessible through the gauge openings and the A/C vent opening.
Installation of the new dash is just the opposite.
Good luck,
Tim

jeez mon,
I've been staring at and hating my cracked dash on my 86 for years because I thought the windscreen had to be removed. I've even put a dash pad over it [and I don't like those].
So, this is concurrent with the dash/vent re-design for 86 and on ?

The major change in the '86 and later dashes was that they were no longer held down at the leading edge with vertical screws that were only accessible with the glass removed.
The '86 and later dashes are instead held down at the leading edge only by the (then new) long single defroster vent, which is easily removed by the 5 screws that are angled towards the cabin.
Good luck,
Tim
tchanson,
Would the later model dash pads (carrera) fit on SC models? It's getting difficult to find good used SC dash pad. Hershey swap meet is just a week from now and I not sure the carrera's could be retrofitted. Hate to pay some $$$ and later find out it won't work. How about the whole dash board assembly swap (SC to carrera)?
Anybody tried this before? Thanks.

I have what I think is a dash top for an SC for sale. It has the center AC opening and is leather.
How would I know if it fits an SC? If you are interested I can look at it more closely. It is black.
I may have a friend going to hershey that could deliver to you.
