Fuchs or not?
I've a set of what I thought were Fuchs wheels, but upon further review I'm not seeing the trademark on the backs of the wheels, so I think they're repros. They're 15 x 6 and pretty nice looking ragardless. I'm thinking of selling them but if they're not genuine, what do we think they're worth? What do repro early Fuchs go for these days? I have to believe the size and style alone would be hard to find. How can I verify they aren't Fuchs and, if they're not, what other manufacturers made repros of the early wheels?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Doug,
I bought a set of repro Fuchs a while back for $400 and sold them a week later for $500. I don't know if that is the going price or not. I knew they were NOT real Fuchs, and sold them as NOT real Fuchs. The buyer put them on his Bug. I don't remember seeing any markings whatsoever on the wheels, so I can't tell you who made them. I seem to recall someone (tweeks or performance prods) selling repros and they were made by Eagle.

Thanks, that's probably what I'll end up trying to sell them for. Real or not, they're worth something!
FYI...there were markings on the back of each "spoke", one said 15x6, one had a load limit, and one just had "MAW" (at least that's what I think it said...I'll confirm tonight).
I know this won't help with identification, but here's a pic of the wheels...

I don't know, but since you live close by, come on over and see! (They're not on the car anymore...)
Gonna put some old style Fuchs on the 924?

Yes, the fakes are heavier (since they are not forged).
Also clean the backs really well in the wells of the spokes and look hard for the little foxes, the P in a triangle and a part no.
If heavy and have none of those they are surely fakes.

I guess I haven't lifted enough wheels to know if they can be termed "heavy" or not...they certainly don't feel too heavy to me, but what do I know?
I'll try to clean them tonight or the next and get an accurate reading off the back. At first glance I didn't see any little foxes and a part #, which is why I think they're fakes.

The fake should be easy to spot. If you look at the back of the rim you can see the casting. They were made by pour casting so the inside of the wheels would look rough non finished. Also look for the porsche part #. Fake were made by american racing wheels i think.

American Racing never made a repro Fuchs. American Eagle did. These will have a large AEW cast into the back of one spoke.
The size will also be cast as 15x6, not stamped 6x15 as is Porsche's convention.
Note on Doug's pics the triangular holes are pointier than original ones. The spokes are also narrower where they meet the center ring than originals.

Sell them over on:
http://www.thesamba.com
This is the "Pelican" site of the VW world. You should be able to get $500 for the set with tires. The VW crowd isn't that worried about strength.
Don't bother on eBay. I've seen many auctions for repro wheels that don't attract any bids at all.
