Default Need Infomation on 86 911

I am looking to purschase a 86 911 and would like to know what the trouble areas are for 911's. The 911 I am looking out has 130,00 miles. I currently have an 83 928.

Thank you all for your help

Did you check the 911 FAQ?

http://www.rennlist.org/FAQ/

Perhaps this document, especially with the checklist it provides, can begin to give you the information you need.

Good luck,
Tom

Too bad (for me) that you've already got one in mind as well as your location. I'd have tried to sell you mine! :-)

Anyway, being a current owner of an 86 911 (Targa), there've been only two fairly expensive occurrences with my car. The first was when I had an oil leak (ended up needing to replace the clutch due to it but upgraded the clutch in the process!) and the 2nd was when I had to get several of the gears rebuilt.

Other than that, it's just been oil changes, valve adjustments, and "regular service."

Then again, having only owned an 86 911 Targa and an 87 911 Turbo, I can't say I have solid comparative data as things to look out for relative to other Porsche models.

Valve guides are the big issues with the Carrera engines. Generally any car with over 70K miles should be suspect. Increased oil consuption and a puff of blue smoke on decreration are the clues. Headstuds should also be checked as they are an issue with all of the aircooled 911s. A broken one will cost a lot to get fixed.

Good luck with your search.

TMH that is great website thank you!!

87turbo911 How much are you selling your 86 for?

Noel thank you for the great information.

I am going to test drive the car on Thursday. Thay are selling it for 13,999. I have never driven a 911 I hope they are as fun as a 928. I must say the 911 sure does have a great look to them. Once again thank you all for the information.

I'd like to get as close to $16K as possible for my car. I do have "extra incentive" items to help things along, though.

-----

Stuff like:
An extra set of wheels. I bought 16x7/8 BBS gold mesh wheels to go with the 15x6/7 Fuchs that came with the car.

Hood and Nose Bra (Colgan): Bought but never put on. I ended up not putting it on because I read that I'd have to adjust the hood height to install it and have to take it off and put it on depending on weather. I have mirror bras that I've never put on too but I think I want to keep them for track days in the 87 911 Turbo!

"Track Pipe": A muffler bypass made by Michael "Over210MPH" that I bought a couple of years ago but never installed.

-----

I think that's it. Those are things I won't really have any use for anymore if I don't have the Targa anymore. Well, I might be able to use the bra but I probably wouldn't anyway.
