Default Cost to add Tail

Does anyone have experience adding a tail to a 1987-89 911? I'm considering purchasing a 1988 Targa without a tail, but will want to add a factory correct tail. Any estimate for the cost to make this addition?

Thanks,

Steve

I'm adding a tail to my '81 SC right now. As a point of refecnce its costing me $900 for a used Carrera tail including the deck lid. Paint is running me $500.

I had been looking on Ebay for a while for the appropriate tail but ultimately found one in a shop here in LA. Performance Products has the OEM tails as well as the aftermarket tails. If you're not interested in keeping it original to its vintage, you could always add an RS, duck or some other type of wing.

have fun.

Make sure that you add a front chin spoiler too.

I did it... Found a tail on E-bay (painted same color of my car, OEM)
There is another one from the same guy (he apparently works on these as a side business) for sale now. I paid $850 for it.
Ten u have to install it. I was having other stuff done to my car so my mechanic did it for me (1hr labor).
To this you must add the cost of a front chin ($225 from pelican). You can install it by yourself (2hr labor).

So all in all you have to budget $1200.

Good luck

As richglickel and mamoroso stated you MUST add the chin spoiler at the sametime. Not doing so will totally unbalance the air dynamics of the car and make it dangerous at speed.

How about the reverse? What should it cost to "revert" a whale-tail car to one with the traditional rear decklid? I've never seen on selling on, say, Performance Products or Pelican the way I've seen "wings" and whale-tails for sale. I guess one would need to check auto dismantlers and the like?

Thanks

I strongly recommend getting a used replacement lid that has a tail instead of modifying yours. It will pay off when you go to sell your car. Many Porsche enthusiasts don't like the tail. Also, you will need the front chin spoiler for dynamics.

I have a decklid without the tail. It came my 88 Guards Red. It's in the attic, collecting dust. It's in really good shape. If anybody is interested I am sure we can find a fair price...

Are the decklids between the '86 and '87 model years "compatible?" I'd have to guess that there's a chance that they wouldn't be since there were visible changes to the style of the car. But, at the same time, things like the rear decklid could've just "carried over" into the next year.

I believe the decklids are the same from '74-'94. I don't know if the early 911s were the same, or if they changed with the 993, but everything else in between should be directly interchangeable.

Also, another alternative is a fiberglass reproduction base with the factory rubber lip. Those are usually about $500-$600 +/- from someplace like Vertex, plus the cost of painting. That is for the tail only, using your existing deck lid.
