My AC died
My A/C no longer comes on. When I turn it on there is no
fan action any longer. I believe there is a relay in the
smuggler's box up front. Is there some way I can test this
before I order a new relay? It's not a fuse, I checked.
Or, am I looking in the wrong area. I have the two dials right
in front of the shifter on the console. One for temp and other
for fan.
Once fixed, I need a recharge. What's the story on that. Can
any good A/C shop do this. What do they recharge with as
we don't use freon anymore?
good thing I love my garage.........
thanks for any help

There is a good chance that your evaporator motor is kaput...
There is no relay in the smuggler's box but that is where the evaporator assembly is located. You can unplug the power harness apply 12V to the motor and hear if it hums.
The good news is that the Bosch motor can be purchased and replaced without having to discharge the system...!

Jascha K. How do you go about removing the surrounding hardware/plastic shrouds to get to the motor? I looked, but can't determine where to start. I've done several total rebuilds/replacemnt of A/C systems in Porsches, but not just the motor. Any info would be appreciated

Once you open the smugglers box things will get fairly obvious.
* ! DO NOT disconnect the refrigerant connections ! *
You may want to test if the motor is running by providing 12V to the connector (after you pull it apart)
1. The A/C evaporator assembly comes apart: the bottom portion houses the coils and the top portion houses the blower motor.
2. There are 4 wide C-clips binding the two halves together. You need to pry them off and are sure to drop them to the bottomless pit (compartment floor). One way around that dilemma is to string a wire through the eyelet such that you will always catch them from falling down. In addition you will need to unbolt the two brackets encoring the assembly to the smugglers compartment.
3. Remove the hose clamp from the large air outflow duct and you should be able to lift that portion of the away. Gently pull evaporator temperature probe…
4. You will need to take off the fan which is secured to the shaft with a hex bolt (use some W40 or other penetrant to make the remover easy)
Let’s hope this helps… otherwise give me a shout!

There is a fan motor relay in the smuggler's box. Passenger side mounted to wall. I ordered a new relay and now everything works!!!!! The new relay has a 15 amp fuse built in. $25 fix.
