Default battery charger/starter

Need a recommendation on a battery starter/charger for my 1989 911 cabriolet. A trickle charge feature would be a plus also. What specs and amp levels should I look for, what brand would you recommend, and where can I purchase it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated.

Not sure if I've come across a starter/charger with a built in battery conditioner. I assume you mean a battery conditioner rather than a trickle charger - leaving a trickle charger on a battery will eventually fry it.

I have a German made Absaar charging/stater unit but I have been warned about using the starter facility on cars with too many modern electronics as it can cause damage. I also have a CSI Aiflow battery conditioner connected up to the battery on my '76 911, which has been in use now for 5 years and the battery is still OK. I believe the Airflow product is available in the USA.

I read recently where Porsche AG recommended a Battery Maintainer that plugs into the cigarette lighter and provides a continual source of power. This would be good if you had a slow drain over a period of a few days. This is in the ad on Pelican Parts "To prevent the possibility of a dead battery, Porsche AG recommends the battery be kept in a fully charged state using the factory approved battery maintainer whenever the vehicle in not in use." The part number is U-043-202-56, cost is $71.25, if interested, I would call Pelican to ensure the part is what you want, their number is 888-280-7799. Hope this helps.

Cool

Thanks to all who responded. Maybe I should just move to where it's sunny year round and there is no snow or salt, then I could drive my cab every day and wouldn't have to worry about the battery draining. Wishful thinking, but unlikely, so I better start looking into those recommendations. Thanks again for the help.

I have a Shumacher on-board charger. About $30 from Kragen.

It mounts right next to the battery, and attaches to the bolts on the cable clamps. It has a small pigtail that attaches to an extension cord. I leave it attached when I'm not driving for long periods of time. Works great!

1.5 to 2 amps is a good rate to charge/maintain your battery. Look for a battery maintainer that has an output in this range.
