Default 70 911T with 3.0...Oil cooler needed?

Hi there,
I've got a 70 911T 2.2 project with a 3.0 1979 SC engine on it. I do have the 2.2 Zenith carbureted engine also but I'll rather keep the SC engine on it for the extra HP.
However the car didn't have of course a front oil cooler. Will that be required? The car is just going to be used for normal road driving but in the hot Texas climate. Of course the
factory went to the front trombone system with the 3.0 engines..........

i would say in Texas, absolutely.
Also if you are going to fit one i would get the Carrera style with a fan you can manually override and turn on with a switch.

Trombone was worthless in Az summer heat, probably fine in Germany. I put a Carrera radiator unit/complete in my 911 SC and it is fantastic. I can run in 100 degree ambient and higher with 220 max if getting on it and normally about 205/210 in 100 and over.
In 'normal heat' 95 ambient and below 190 ish. I do partially block it off in our cooler weather/winter. I switched the fan at the dash for control and only use it in high heat and stop/go driving.

Brass SC cooler for my 3.2 and I have never seen higher than 190F. Folks recommend a fan with it but I have never had any reason to.

You've never seen temps over 190...then you drive like an old woman or something is wrong with your gauge....

Yes. My 71 with a 2.7 and carbs in good tune would run fine just driving. But any spirited or warm day and the engine mounted cooler would, not keep up.

Figured it wasn't worth the effort to reply -- the OP was looking for info, not insults.

Oh well, think I'll enjoy another day of driving in wonderful, moderate temps on some amazing roads, like I can do 350 days every year.

bit of a misnomer, though. The brass row cooler is substantially more effective than the engine-mounted only cooler and works very well.
If you're going to go through the effort of installing a secondary cooler, install the 3.2 radiator. That said, the brass row (not trombone) cooler does have advantage of durability over the 3.2 radiator.

I also live in a mild climate, but when I run up ACH to 8000 ft, the car gets worked, HARD. Engine only cooler, didn't cut it. Brass cooler may have been ok on the 2.7. With my HOT 2.8, the carrera cooler works a treat.

Sorry, couldn't help that one...who ever owned a Porsche and never got the temp over 190... calling BS or this is owned by Nancy Pelosi... loved the local temp. chart tho lol.

So, as to the OP...if you drive a 3.0 in the spirited manner Porsche expected then a stock Carrera or similar cooler will help... I have put one in place and it has really helped in our hot climate and strangely...when driving spiritedly in 50/60 ish weather it would still climb into the 230's and higher in elevated terrain. No more with the Porsche oil radiator/block off and fan. The trombone is worthless and the tubed radiator only slightly better. If you are going to go to the effort to do this go all the way and get a proper radiator.... or, keep it under 50 mph.

+1

I went with a single radiator cooler kit from elephant racing and has never went passed normal temp with extended spirited driving...

Thanks for the guidance.....a 2.2E engine with MFI has surfaced and I'll use that one for now as the work to set up the plumbing might be a lot for now, want to use the thing asap....
