Boxter or 911 Cab?
I am a current owner of an 80 911 SC Targa and I am considering moving up and am trying to figure out which way to go: Newer Boxter or '89 era 911 Cabrio? I have around 30K to spend and my main consideration besides fun is reliability and repair expenses. I live in So. Cal and this would be my daily driver 365 for a 26 mi commute plus fun weekend drives. Gas milleage is also a consideration since we are paying almost $2.40 for Super around here
I know this board is probably biased towards Boxers but I see that many of you own both styles.

An '89 Cab will be similar to your Targa with the improved G-50 transmission and a bit more power. The 911 didn't change drastically from 1980 to the last 3.2 cars (unlike the change from the 3.2 to the 964).
The Boxster will be much more refined, have A/C that works and will generally feel much more modern. The newer Boxster should require a bit less maintenance and repairs (all depending on the condition of the car you buy), though the first year Boxsters are 7+ years old by now.
You'll have to drive examples of each to see which will suit your needs and wants.
Good Luck,
Jay

Will you ever need the rear seats for kids or double date? 911! Do you want something that will hold value (911) or depreciate (Boxster)? If you get a good PPI, neither should present big differences in maintenance costs. 911 A/C system will work fine if it's in proper working order. 86' and later have the new vent system. You know the 915. You can get the G-50 if you need it.
Why would this 911 forum be biased toward Boxsters. What does the market tell you when an 3.2 Carrera sells in the same range as early Boxsters? I like the Boxster but it's a different animal.

Why not an '89 Targa? Having owned both a Targa and Cabriolet, I can tell you that the Targa top is much easier to deal with than the Cab boot. I would only get the Boxster if air conditioning is important to you. My experence with two G-50 Carreras is that once you get them sorted and begin driving them daily, they are very reliable.
