Default Newbie Looking to buy 80' SC any advice?

I am looking at a 1980 SC with 90K on it. It has most of the records. Does not have the updated Carrera tensioners but does have the pop valve in the airbox. It was a California car so does the EGR system cause any problems besides possible oil leaks. The car had the valves adjusted about 9K ago and all shift bushings have been replaced in the tranny so it shifts accurate(not vague) but it is really stiff. It is leaking oil at the union on the right side. The last 911 I owned was a 75' about 12 years ago. I will probably only put 2500 miles a year on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You absolutely need the Carrera chain tensioner on the car, ditto the pop-off valve. Also, you should have to lower valve cover removed during the PPI to check for head stud problems. I had an estimate to freshen (not rebuild...freshen) an '82 motor...needed studs (one was already broken)...around $4,000 for the motor work, including all new gaskets and fixing misc leaks while they were in there. Add the trannny work (may as well when you have the motor out) to fix a couple of syncros and that's anotherv $1,200 or so...all in all, around $5,500-$6,000 was needed on this motor. Bottom line, check for head studs, and be aware that any time you need motor work, the motor comes and and it's costly!

The original chain tensioners in this car lasted at least 90,000 miles. If you're on a budget and don't want to or can't spend the money for the Carrera tensioners, you can put a new set of the old style tensioners in (without probably having to remove the motor - if I remember correctly) for much less than the Carrera tensioner upgrade.

Porsche did use the old style tensioners from 1965 to 1983, so they were a somewhat reliable tensioner for a few years... Carrera tensioners can fail as well, but their basic design tends to make them more reliable.

But, the safe bet is a set of new Carrera tensioners.
